Scientific interests

theory of linguistic personality, associative linguistics, theory and practice of lexicography

Yuri Nikolayevich Karaulov is an outstanding representative of the Russian humanities, a major specialist in the theory of language and Russian studies. He is the author of over 300 scientific works on Russian and general linguistics, including 12 monographs and 11 dictionaries. Research activities scientist is associated with three scientific directions- this is the "theory of linguistic personality", "associative linguistics", "theory and practice of lexicography". Closely bound friend with a friend, they are reflected in such well-known works by Yu.N. Karaulova as “General and Russian Ideography” (1976), “Linguistic Construction and Thesaurus of the Literary Language” (1981), “Russian Language and Linguistic Personality” (1987, 2002, 2003. 2004), “Pushkin’s Dictionary and the Evolution of Russian Language Ability ” (1992), “Associative Grammar of the Russian Language” (1993); in fundamentally new dictionaries - semantic, associative, metaphors, artistic speech.

Yu.N. Karaulov demonstrated a fundamentally new approach to the study of the semantic side of the language, which was called the “thesaurus method in semantics”. The theory of ideography developed by the author made it possible to identify common patterns in the organization of the lexical system at all its levels - from the microstructure of the word and the structure of the semantic field to the picture of the world reflected in the language as a whole. It is in this book that Yu.N. Karaulov formulates the "rule of six steps", reflecting such a property of the dictionary as its semantic continuity. The continuation and next step in the development of lexicographic ideas was the work “Linguistic construction and the thesaurus of the literary language” (1981). The concept of the thesaurus, which is most important for ideography, received a new interpretation here. Thesaurus for Yu.N. Karaulova is “any dictionary that explicitly fixes the semantic relations between its constituent units”. Such an understanding of the thesaurus made it possible in the early 1980s to set the task, which was carried out later, of creating a thesaurus-type dictionary of the Russian language.

Developed by Yu.N. Karaulov's theory of creating dictionaries-thesauri, his substantiated idea of the parametric structure and typology of dictionaries as the principles on which the automation of the content aspects of lexicographic work is based, were implemented by the author himself in practice - when creating semantic dictionaries of the Russian language using a computer. (“Frequency Dictionary of Semantic Multipliers of the Russian Language” 1980, “Russian Semantic Dictionary” 1982, co-authored). The ideas of constructing a thesaurus based on the vocabulary parametrization procedure formed the basis for the construction of other original dictionaries by Yu.N. Karaulov, including The Dictionary of Russian Political Metaphors (1994, co-authored with A.N. Baranov).

August 26 marks the 70th anniversary of the member editorial board GRAMOTY.RU Yuri Nikolaevich Karaulov.
