Disservice

From the book All Ages and the Secrets of Happiness author Efimov Georgy Mikhailovich

Disservice I recently received a comment on a post where I listed the main areas of life for setting goals (link). The essence of the message is why there is no charity on the list?

A disservice is a clumsy, inept help in something that brought evil, harm, grief instead of good, good. The phrase came from the fable “The Hermit and the Bear” written in 1807, although this phraseological unit is not in the fable, but that is precisely its meaning. At the same time, in "The Hermit and the Bear" there are two expressions that have become unchanged:
  • "A helpful fool is more dangerous than an enemy"
  • "So rubbish is not taken out of the hut."

Hermit and Bear

Although the service is dear to us in need,
But not everyone knows how to take it:
God forbid to contact the fool!
A helpful fool is more dangerous than an enemy.
___________

There lived a man rootless, lonely,
Far from the city, in the wilderness.
About desert life, no matter how sweet you write,
And not everyone is able to live alone:
It is comforting for us to share sadness and joy.
They will say to me: “And the meadow, and the dark oak tree,
Hillocks, streams and silk ant? -
“Great, to say the least!
And everyone will get bored, as there is no one to say words with.
So the Hermit
I miss being forever alone.
He goes into the forest to push at the neighbors,
To get to know someone.
Whom to come across in the forest
Besides wolves or bears?
And for sure, he met with a big Bear,
But there is nothing to do: he takes off his hat,
And bow to the dear neighbor.
A neighbor holds out a paw to him,
And, word for word, they get to know each other,
Then they make friends
Then they can't part
And spend whole days together.
What did they have, and what happened to the conversation,
Or sayings, or some jokes,
And how did their conversation go?
I don't know the time right now.
The hermit was silent;
Mishuk is silent by nature:
So rubbish is not taken out of the hut.
But be that as it may, the Hermit is very happy,
What God gave him in another treasure.
Everywhere he follows Misha, without Mishenka he is sick,
And Mishenka can't boast enough.
Once friends thought
On a hot day, wander through the groves, through the meadows,
And along the valleys, and along the mountains;
And since the bear man is weaker,
Then our hermit is more likely,
Than Mishenka, tired
And began to lag behind a friend.
Seeing that, he says, like a worthy, Mishka to a friend:
"Lie down, brother, and rest,
Yes, if you want, so pine;
And I will watch over you here at leisure.
The hermit was accommodating: he lay down, yawned,
Yes, he immediately fell asleep.
And Mishka is on the clock - and he is not idle:
A fly landed on a friend's nose.
He fanned his friend;
I looked
A fly on the cheek; rounded up and fly again
On a friend's nose
And more persistent from time to time.
Here is Mishenka, without saying a word,
A weighty cobblestone in the paws raked,
He squatted down, does not translate the spirit,
He himself thinks: “Be quiet, I’ll blow you up!” -
And, a friend has a fly on his forehead,
What strength is there - to grab a friend with a stone in the forehead!
The blow was so dexterous that the skull split apart,
And Mishin's friend stayed there for a long time!

The plot of Krylov's fable is not new. The French fabulist of the 17th century, J. Lafontaine, carried out the same idea in the fable "The Bear and the Gardener". And, they say, it was thanks to La Fontaine that the idiom "A disservice" entered many European languages.

- “He praises us too hard, the article smells like cheap advertising. Warn him it's a disservice."(R. Shtilmark "Heir from Calcutta")

Help can be different: belated and timely, unexpected and long-awaited, gratuitous and selfish. And it happens that it would be better if it did not exist at all. Have you ever accepted help that led to backfire? If yes, then you have been disservice.

It is impossible to understand what the bear has to do with it and why it provides some services when you don’t know the history of the phraseological unit. In this curious question, we will try to figure it out.

The meaning of phraseology

The expression "a disservice" means help that ended up hurting rather than benefiting. There is no mention of malicious intent. The assistant acts out of good intentions and does not expect to become a source of trouble. But due to his own short-sightedness, and sometimes stupidity, he does not solve the problem, but only exacerbates it.

For example, one student offered another to write off his answers to the test on the exam. However, the answers contained errors. In the end, both failed the test.

Or a compassionate passer-by treated the child to a candy, not knowing that the baby was allergic to chocolate.

The wife decided to clean up her husband's desk, as a result of which important papers disappeared. And there are many such examples...

AT Everyday life such situations occur all the time. This phraseologism teaches us to accept and offer help thoughtfully, calculating possible consequences. Main principle do no harm.

The origin of phraseology

In ancient India there was an amusing story about a monkey and a stone. The French fabulist Jean de La Fontaine borrowed this plot for his story L'ours et l'amateur des jardins, turning a monkey into a bear. Ivan Andreevich Krylov translated the fable into Russian.

We know it under the name "The Hermit and the Bear".

According to the plot, a desert man, leading a solitary existence, is tired of loneliness and makes friends with a bear. They walk, but the man is exhausted and goes to sleep. The bear, on the other hand, vigilantly guards the dream, driving away flies from it. Unfortunately, an annoying insect sits on the hermit's nose. The bear, without thinking twice, takes a cobblestone and breaks the skull of a friend, trying to kill the fly.

The fable itself does not contain the expression "a disservice." It was born later, when Krylov's contemporaries discussed the plot of the fable.
