Alexander mozhaev babay where now. Strelkov, Babai and Black Lenin. What are the brightest figures of the DPR doing. - Take on the mission of making history

Alexander Mozhaev, nicknamed "Babai", who took part in the battles in eastern Ukraine on the side of the separatists, complained to Komsomolskaya Pravda how hard it was for him to live in his homeland.

Alexander Mozhaev, in an interview with Komsomolskaya Pravda, said that he was forced to leave the Donbass and return to his family in the city of Belorechensk in the Krasnodar Territory.

“In September last year, I went to the Donbass, and left before the New Year. We were asked to leave. They said, if you want to live, leave. So it was very dangerous to be there. The Cossacks were dispersed, some were even kept in cellars. Thank God I got through! So we had to leave. About 15 people left with us,” he told reporters, stating that he would return to Donbass.

At the same time, “Babai” complained that he allegedly did not receive money for his “service”.

“And I have a family, three children. I simply have nothing to support them,” the militant complains.

The publication notes that the “Cossack Babai” was previously tried for the distribution of hemp and he served nine years in prison, but was released five years later for exemplary behavior. After one of the drunken fights, he was charged with threatening to kill or cause grievous bodily harm. The cases were allegedly closed, but Mozhaev complains that his criminal past prevents him from getting a job.

The face of the militia of the South-East of Ukraine began its campaign in March back in Crimea, and for the past few months a Cossack has been guarding one of the checkpoints in the center of Kramatorsk. During this time, Babai never made contact with the enemy, but he intimidated the Ukrainian army on the Internet, churning out appeal videos one by one. The militias fought and fought for Kramatorsk and Slavyansk, but an order came from the Minister of Defense of the proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic, Igor Strelkov, that all units, including the Cossacks, regroup and leave these cities. But only the brave lads opposed this order, although most of them refused to stay there and partisan. Now Babai is in the Crimea, where he helps to assemble a special Cossack regiment.

This is not desertion, these are rumors, - said Alexander Mozhaev us by phone. – We were generally against leaving these cities. Not that they were very important in strategic plan, not really. It's just that there are still civilians left. The Ukrainian army watered this city with phosphorus, it was almost impossible to stay there - without water, sewerage and light. But we Cossacks can fight in any conditions. Our fighting brothers, who did not want to leave there, continue to fight and partisan there. It is they who tell me how Ukrainian troops treat civilians there. Almost repressions and shadowing began to betray supporters of the militia and traitors. That's why we were against it. When such arbitrariness occurs, and we are ordered to leave, I think this is unfair. After all, they are fighting not for stones and houses, but for the world above their heads.

According to Mozhaev, part of the Cossack detachment moved to the Crimea in an unknown way. In which city or village their camp settled, it is not known exactly. One thing is clear, that the Cossacks are gathering their regiment here, so that later they can return to the South-East and independently fight against the Ukrainian army.

Who is this Strelkov? Baba continues. – He is the Minister of Defense of the DPR. How can he even command the Cossacks?! He has his troops, let them give instructions. Now we are in the Crimea, where exactly, I can’t say. We are gathering volunteers here for the Cossack regiment. Several people have already come to us. Until we recruit the right number of people, we will not leave here. We will be equipped, we will return to the South-East and we ourselves will fight against the Ukrainian troops, partisan and slowly destroy them. I heard that Ukrainians are gathering troops on the border with the peninsula. Perhaps we will join the fight here. We just don't want to obey anyone. We are independent.

Recall that earlier Strelkov said that Babai deserted with the Crimean Cossacks to Russia.

Cossack Babai: “Well, Orthodox, are you going against the Orthodox ?!”

The same colorful Cossack from the Kuban, who has become more popular than the prosecutor of the Republic of Crimea Natalya Poklonskaya, regularly pleases Internet users with new videos, where the lad constantly turns to the Ukrainian authorities, then to the soldiers

AND AT THIS TIME Babai's brother: "He is not a mercenary" Previously, Alexander Mozhaev lived with his parents and brother Mikhail in a high-rise building, but then the couple moved to a private house. AND AT THIS TIME

Babai's brother: "He is not a mercenary"

Previously, Alexander Mozhaev lived with his parents and brother Mikhail in a high-rise building, but then the couple moved to a private house. The boys grew up in a poor family. Before retirement, her mother worked as a janitor, and her father worked as a mechanic and occasionally as a driver. Babai is the eldest son in the family, the youngest Mikhail is seven years younger than him. Alexander Mozhaev, before his campaign in the Crimea and the south-east of Ukraine, lived in his grandmother's private house with his wife, daughter and the family of his brother Mikhail

39 year old Alexandra Mozhaeva from the Kuban Belorechensk, they are better known by his nickname - the Cossack Babai. Colorful appearance, camouflage with St. George ribbons and yellow glasses on his face. In this form, the father of three children first appeared in the Crimea, and when the peninsula was annexed to Russia, he went to the Donbass along with a volunteer detachment of Cossacks.

Photos of the bearded man immediately appeared on the Internet, he became a hero on the net, having received the call sign - Babai. And the Ukrainian press immediately accused him of shooting down one of the helicopters from a grenade launcher in Kramatorsk. Although the Cossack himself denies this. Even in the US State Department there are legends about him. mistress Psaki I recognized in him the archetypical figure of a Russian saboteur. Since then, any heroically built bearded man is a person who is directly related to Russia.

A year ago, Babai returned to his native Belorechensk from Donbass. His wife, children, unemployment and a criminal case initiated for threatening to kill him were waiting for him. Alexander Mozhaev himself says that he did not attack anyone, and the case against him was fabricated.

The Free Press correspondent met with the colorful Cossack and talked to him about life before and after Donbass, about his family and what Alexander Mozhaev is going to do next.

You know, in my native Belorechensk they recognize me on the street, take pictures with me. Many come up and say thank you. For the fact that he was a volunteer in the Crimea, that Donbass protected from the infidels, - the Cossack Babai began the conversation. - And they also ask if we will go to the DPR again, and what awaits us in general next. What will happen next? And then the world awaits us ...

Babai pauses for a minute and continues:

world in the near future. In order for it to come, we will need to fight a little more, that is, identify our enemies and punish them so that they no longer climb on us. We need to discourage their desire to conquer Russia. The enemy is coming from the West. And he created a framework for himself and such a life that if Russia were closed by an iron curtain, then ISIS (a group banned in our country) would simply destroy all of Europe. The West itself created them and suffered from them.

"SP": - Are you going to Donbass again?

I'm planning a lot. We were going there at the beginning of 2015, but the trip was constantly postponed for two weeks, then for a month, then for two or three months. During all this time, we began to recognize even more enemies. During this time, they began to open up more, show their true face. So when in the DPR, I won’t say for sure.

"SP": - In the summer, the media wrote that you could not find a job in your hometown. What are you doing now?

We have a military-patriotic club, and I am now excavating. We learn from people what happened in their area during the war. Many old-timers remember that a plane crashed there, it sank there, five families were shot there. Moreover, even eyewitnesses tell this. True, they have already died, the Kingdom of heaven to them. We recently found the plane, found out its number and the composition of the crew. Until now, there was a monument to nameless pilots, but now they have names. And so, in general, we train and wait for one of our enemies to start active fighting. Then we will finally destroy them.

While Alexander Mozhaev fought in the DPR, a case was filed against him in the Kuban. It's been going on since 2013. In September, he and a friend came to Vyselki to visit an Afghan veteran. We sat and drank to the meeting. Then someone started honking outside the window, Babai came out, a fight broke out. As a result, the case ended with the fact that a statement was written against Mozhaev for attacking the driver of a car with a knife. And for the threat of murder or causing grievous bodily harm, a criminal was brought against the Cossack. Although Alexander Mozhaev himself says that he did not attack anyone and his case was fabricated.

"SP": - How did it all end? - I ask Alexander Mozhaev .

I grew a beard while searching for the truth. I was told that I would trip over my beard, but I would never find the truth. And I found. This true truth should have prevailed because I was innocent and I was slandered. They feel like local kings there, I heard that they own the fields and they have a lot of money, I believe that they paid all the bodies that were involved in the case. To please both parties, the court had to give me a suspended sentence and a fine. And all this fell under the amnesty.

"SP": - It was once said that you would like to engage in politics ...

I would like to, but the policy is somehow rosy. There is another side - life. There is black and there is white, there are no other colors there. For example, one cannot bend in front of another country in order to be pleasing to it. We now need to build our political position so that the whole world understands that Russia is the strongest, most powerful, most economically and physically developed country. In order to explain this to them, we have already shown our tank. We insisted that they pay with our rubles for our energy resources. That is, they must buy rubles. If other countries buy rubles from us to buy our goods, the dollar and the euro can depreciate in two seconds. The owner of the country, who cares about his people, just needs to say that our ruble is worth one gram of gold. Can you imagine what will happen in the market then?

"SP": - And what should be the owner of the country?

The head of the country must take care of the well-being of the people, as a father takes care of his family. He will not allow his children to starve, wear bad clothes, lack anything. Such a leader will solve these problems. When he understands that every person is his child, and considers himself the owner of a big house, people will take care of him and their families ... A person who has a continuation of the family will fight for his children, he will think about how them to live on with what they have. And now, with these salaries and prices, a person cannot afford to have more children, because they need to be fed, shoes and clothes. Now, many people work several jobs instead of raising their children, and when they come home, there is not enough time for anything. For example, my father, God rest his soul, brought me up to be kind, honest and fair. I also want to teach my children this.

And I would not make promises if I were the government. Here they say that in 2018 life will improve. The question is, what prevents it from being adjusted tomorrow? After all, tomorrow is also the future. It turns out they don't know how to do it. They just make promises to people. People live by these promises, but in the end, the people who promised are re-elected, and others are put in their place. Don't trust someone who says they can do something, trust someone who says they know how to do it. And he needs to do it.

"SP": - Many people compare you with the epic hero, the same Ilya Muromets, who spent thirty years and three years on the stove and got up when he felt his high destiny. Did you also lie on the stove before the events in Ukraine?

No, I have a sense of justice, kindness and love for the Motherland since birth. Still, the genes of the ancestors are present. As he was born, so he came in handy.

"SP": - Did Donbass change you?

When I returned, met with my acquaintances, I behaved with them in the same way as before. They tell me, never mind, you thundered all over the world. And I say, no, it's all for the glory of the Lord. God created Adam and Eve in his own image and created the forbidden fruit. Whoever ate it is a sinner. It turned out as if we pulled out this fruit, but did not eat it and did not feel its taste, and sin bypassed us ...

And yet, many people of the old school remained with their opinions, thoughts, traditions, way of life, and they do not absorb all this foreign licentiousness and sinfulness. All this infuriates the West. We honor the traditions of our people, and the West cannot defeat us. We seem to have awakened now and realized that they are trying to enslave us, so we must gather our strength, mind, wisdom and fight back. Specific, hard. I would have done it if I had a Cossack army, but I have nothing to feed it.

A resident of the Kuban, Alexander Mozhaev, known as a participant in the conflict in the Donbass "Cossack Babai", spoke about how he imagines the future of Russia.

As Mozhaev explained in an interview with Gazeta.Ru, he began to think about politics and economics in Russia after participating in a military conflict. “After the war, I began to think about how to change life here for the better. And in a peaceful way. So that the Russians live well, so that the people live, and do not exist, ”said Babai.

He suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin change the name of his position to the Russian “tsar” and outlined his political and economic program: “It is desirable that prices stop, the economy begins to develop: when people have money, they trade, build, expand. The ruble can be turned into gold, but we sell gas, oil, and other minerals abroad. They should be sold only for rubles, and the ruble - buy from us, please. We can set the price at least one hundred dollars per ruble. Finally, it is necessary to create a Cossack army that would help the state and the president-tsar to restore order in the world. It's easy and simple," Cossack Babai is sure.

Asked what he would ask Putin, Mozhaev said: “Weapons. Another thing is to create a Cossack army and declare the Day of Peace on Earth so that everyone lives in peace, and the Cossacks come to those who want war and say: well, let's fight. First of all, I would ask to help the Cossack people so that they can live as we want. Cossacks will be united either by Putin or war. The state should be grateful to us, but we did not see gratitude either for Crimea or for Donbass. Although both Crimea and Donbass have shown that the Cossacks are a real force.”

Now Babai is raising children and “analyzes events in the world” - he is “preparing to go with his comrades somewhere where a hearth breaks out.”

“I can go to work, but the salary should be human. Look at the vacancies: the watchman is offered 7 thousand salaries, the loader - 15 thousand. These are not salaries, this is the humiliation of people. It is impossible to support this system further, it depresses self-esteem, dignity, angers a person,” Mozhaev said. - When I arrived from the war, a debt for a communal apartment accumulated, the gas and electricity were almost cut off. I turned to the head of the district, he helped to pay. Now again the debt is 15 thousand, they threaten to cut it off. And who are they to raise the price of gas? Gas is taken from the land that our ancestors annexed to Russia. What were they fighting for? For their descendants to pay for these minerals?”

The story of how an unremarkable resident of Belorechensk Alexander Mozhaev became the legendary Cossack Babai, one of the symbols of the war with Ukraine. Now he is back in his hometown. The war subsided, but not for him

The war in eastern Ukraine has its own rich epic. For the most part, it is born on the Internet and passed from mouth to mouth, from page to page. Terrifying tales of torture, legends of exploits, horrors of battle scenes. Even in any epic there are legendary heroes, titanic personalities around which all the main events unfold. And a special place in the pantheon of military demigods of Donbass is occupied by the figure of the Cossack Babai. He has his own public on VKontakte for 13 thousand people and an incredible amount of fan art. Fans of Babai draw him as a pumped-up giant, a real hero. Songs are composed about Babai: “Who are the Pindos-Japanese King Kong and Godzilla? Ugh! Russian Babai - this is strength, ”- is reading rapper Drago is from Kharkov. Thousands of memes with the brutal physiognomy of Babai go around the network, not to mention the legends associated with military exploits (he personally shot down a helicopter from a grenade launcher, is a GRU officer, etc.) But not much is known about a real person, information is scarce and contradictory.

A man in a leather jacket is walking along the railway station square in Belorechensk. Under it is a striped shirt with a famously unbuttoned collar, a weighty cross can be seen around the neck. Having seen enough heroic fan art, I expected to see a camouflage giant, the real Hagrid, but Babai turned out to be a short, sturdy man, quite modest at first glance. Ordinary Alexander Mozhaev. We say hello and go "to the headquarters."

We are walking along the corridor of the office center, Babai is interested in whether I am a patriot or not. He opens a small office. Opposite the door hangs the flag of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic, under it is a calendar public organization Veterans "Combat Brotherhood". To the right, Jesus Christ looks from a large red-and-white banner. The room is furnished with icons, flags, all kinds of weapons are on the shelves - from rare daggers and grenades from World War II to modern optics, helmets and knives. There are a lot of walkie-talkies on the table - they produce an unpleasant rattle. Babai refuses to tell what kind of place this is, what they are doing here, and where so many near-militarist objects come from. He says that this information can damage the common cause and is limited to the fact that the Cossack organization “Wolf Hundred” and “Combat Brotherhood” are based here, and walkie-talkies are needed for training.

BabaiPhoto: Vlad Moiseev

A tall gray-haired man enters the room. His name is Aleksey, he is also a Cossack, he participated in the East Ukrainian conflict. Babai warns that Alexei will be present during our conversation, takes binoculars and peers at the landscape outside the window for a long time, like a real knight of Gotham. But nothing happens on the street - the station square is empty, pensioners are lazily discussing something on the benches, a woman is feeding pigeons - a real provincial idyll. Who Babai is looking for is a military secret.

Have you checked the documents? - the detailed Alexey asks from the threshold. He is here to oversee the interview and advise a friend on what to say and what not to say.
- What do you need?
- Passport, press ID...
“Or maybe you came from Lvov,” Babai says in the tone of an ironic investigator.
- Tell me, do you wear an earring? - asks Alexei.
- I used to wear it a long time ago.
- And what is it for?
- I played music in a group.
- What music is this?
- Rock.
The interview is dragging on. They ask me about what I do, where I worked, what kind of site “Such things” is. A little later, they delicately ask me if I am a Jew.

Cossack genealogy of BabaiPhoto: from personal archive

My parents were simple workers, he continues. - Mom was a cleaner, I helped her from the age of 10, carried buckets of water. We had three brothers in the family. The elder was killed after the army, the kingdom of heaven. He was beaten to death, there was a showdown here. My younger brother is with me when I'm away - he helps the family. We now live in the ancestral home, which was built by our grandfather. Everyone has already died: my mother, father, grandmother, grandfather, the kingdom of heaven to all of them. But the race continues, I have two sons, God bless them. And an older daughter. The last son was just born.

Babai recalls the Soviet past with nostalgia. At school, he loved literature, physical education, art and music, participated in amateur performances, read poetry from the stage. After the 9th grade, I went to college and received the specialty of an electrician. He began to serve as an electrician in the air defense, but in two years he had grown to the position of a castle platoon. Babai says that “hazing stumbled over him” - he just had to beat one particularly annoying grandfather who made him wash toilets. After that, justice prevailed in the platoon.

The whole story of Babai about himself is imbued with the idea of righteous suppression of aggression, establishment of justice and Cossack messianism, whether it is about hazing or the separation of Crimea from Ukraine. He says that such is the fate of the Cossack - to protect Orthodoxy, the king and all that is good from all that is bad. But Babai is not one of those who firmly believes in state institutions, « United Russia and the fairness of the system. In his rhetoric, he is sometimes more radical than the most desperate oppositionists. But unlike them, his worldview is based on the idea that crooks, thieves and agents of Western influence, like cancer, seized power and prevent the president from making the country happy and prosperous, but he almost single-handedly resists them:

The people love their country. Because she is strong, powerful, rich. But he does not like his government. Here is the President good man, it does what it needs to. But next to him is Parliament. They should not get involved in the sovereign's affairs. Here the president is a good person, he does what is necessary. But the parliament should not interfere in the affairs of the sovereign Because the majority of businessmen, oligarchs, for whom the price of life is measured in money, sit in parliament there. Why is our country very rich, but look inside how people live? After all, it should be much better. We have a lot of minerals, gas, oil, a lot of gold, a lot of everything. Why is everything in private hands? It shouldn't be. Subsoil should be managed by state officials. State.

Babai talks for a long time about the fact that we should trade oil and gas for rubles, and equate one ruble to one gram of gold. Babai seems to have a whole political doctrine on how to make the country better. Aleksey, who is sitting next to him, tries to appease his friend, but nothing comes of it. Babai wants Russia to "independently set prices for gas, food and electricity, and employees of state-owned enterprises receive 100,000 a month." And also to stop inflation and increase in food prices. But he does not really believe in the implementation of his ideas.

I want to do good, like I see everything, I understand everything, but I can’t do it. Because it is not beneficial to people, those who sit at the top. Because all their plans, everything can collapse. And they have plans for this moment, as I see it, not very good. They peacefully destroy our population...

Cossacks - Babai's ancestorsPhoto: from personal archive

After the army Mozhaev Cossacks. “Cossacking does not mean bandyukoved,” he explains. Young Babai was engaged in the protection of the forest through the registered Cossacks, built a cordon to combat illegal logging. He also worked part-time in a taxi - he used to be asked to come and make negligent customers pay fares. And in 2005, he was sentenced to nine years in prison for selling drugs. But he spent only 5 years, 1 month and 3 days behind bars.

They set me up, in short, - says Babai. - One person had to give me money. Well, how ... He owed me for that ... In short, he asked me to buy cannabis, so I bought it. Change, I say, bring it. And he brought me six boxes and change. And the surrender was marked.
- Well, that is, you have never sold cannabis?
- No no no.
- But did you use it?
“Well, you know,” he sighs. - When I was imprisoned, my grandmother, the kingdom of heaven to her, asked on the phone why they imprisoned me. I say: "Grandma, for hemp." She: “Oh, infidels, she says. When we were kids, we ate cannabis seeds to survive. We eat and laugh. What about you? And I: "Laws such, grandmother." I think this law should be removed.

Ataman of the Belorechensk district Cossack society of the Kuban Cossack army Viktor Melnikov is sitting in his office. He has an intense gaze and soft intonations. He has been in office for only a year and a half, but Babai has known for a long time.

I have known Alexander since the late 90s. He is from the family, Mozhaev. Both on the side of the mother and on the side of the father. He was already at a young age a member of the Cossack society. First, in the youth hundred before military service and after it he returned to our ranks. Until 2005, until he had troubles in his fate, he was a combatant of the Cossack squad, engaged in environmental activities.

Ataman Viktor MelnikovPhoto: Vlad Moiseev

Ataman Melnikov says that in his youth, Babai was "hooligan, but manageable", even when he drank, he did not make fights, but, on the contrary, became accommodating. When asked how it happened that a conscientious Cossack was involved in the distribution of drugs, the chieftain shrugs his shoulders: "They didn't watch."

I don’t know the details, but he has article 228. This is not a very good article. Ataman of the district then even said: "It would be better if he killed someone." Such an article was fundamentally at odds with our worldview.
Ataman says that practically he alone visited Babai from the entire district Cossack society - few people liked the news that a drug dealer appeared in the ranks of the Cossacks.
- Before he sat down, were there rumors that he was doing such things?
“There were rumors, but nobody really watched him,” says Melnikov. - Of course, they told him: “Sasha, you give it there ...”
- So it turns out that he still sold?
- It turns out that yes.

Despite the article, upon his return to the Cossacks, Babai was accepted as one of their own. Ataman Melnikov is convinced that he realized everything and corrected himself.

Alexander Mozhaev served his term in Primorsko-Akhtarsk, IK-11. He says that the prison taught him a lot, changed him for the better.

It was the work of God. I participated in the construction of the prison temple from the very beginning. When we poured the dome, a bucket fell on me from seven meters. Hit on the head...

There is a long meow. Babai fumbles through his pockets looking for his phone.
- It's from the war. They all had these calls.
- And why?
- Well, a cat or a call - is there a difference? No matter where it works.
Baba continues:
- A full bucket fell and put me on my knee. I feel my hand is gone. They run up to me, take me by the elbows, take me to the medical unit. They sewed it up, they said that the skull was not injured. Only the scalp was a little torn off. Well, everything changed in my mind after that. I began to think no longer about simple life-existence.

At the competition of prison temples, the Primorsko-Akhtar temple took first place, Babai was the first to be anointed and blessed by Bishop Isidore of Ekaterinodar.

After serving four years, Alexander filed a petition for parole, but he was not satisfied. Mozhaev considered that it was unfair - he had no violations, but he was given a bad reference.
- I came back angry and decided to write a letter to the president. Sent. He wrote that lawlessness is happening. That I have everything that I have corrected, I wrote about the temple, about everything. He wrote: "Help me get justice." And what do you think? They called from Rostov from the Office of the President. And they say: quickly understand the whole story.

BabaiPhoto: Vlad Moiseev

They tried to persuade Babai to renounce his appeal, but he did not. Then he was called to a psychologist for a test. The result showed that the prisoner Mozhaev is not just normal, but prone to creativity and generally a wonderful person. Babai liked the characterization given to him by the computer so much that he asked the psychologist for a pen and a piece of paper and copied it down as a keepsake. This document is still kept at his home.

The next attempt to get out on parole was successful.

After his release, Alexander returned to Belorechensk, got a job at the loading site. Reunited with his wife. But in 2013, the court, due to repeated administrative offenses, decided to transfer Mozhaev under administrative supervision, forbid him to be anywhere except at home and work, to leave the region.

In the same year, another trouble happened to Alexander - a new criminal case, this time about attempted murder. He tells the circumstances of what happened for a very long time - it turns out a real action movie. In short, he and his friends quarreled with representatives of the local Korean diaspora. One of them signaled at night under the windows, Alexander asked not to interfere with people's rest. The Korean left, but returned with reinforcements. All this ended in a brawl in which Mozhaev's friend lost his front teeth. Alexander and his comrade were taken to a base owned by the Koreans. They were offered two options. The first is to apologize, the second is to call the police. The Koreans promised to write a statement that Babai came for a bow at night and was going to kill them - he had a penknife with him.

We chose the second option, - says Babai. - A car drove up, I hear: "Healthy, major." A policeman comes in and swears at us: “Why did you come here, are you swollen? Not in my area." I told him: “Are you swearing at us? Introduce yourself." He says: a precinct such and such. And I ask: “Now tell me, how much do they pay you, that you fell on us like a mad dog?” He says "30 thousand a month." It turned out that these Koreans are local kings. Everyone was paid, everyone owes them. A criminal case was brought against me.

Alexander began to search for the truth. He decided that he would not shave off his beard until he proved himself right. Babai says that he did not threaten anyone with murder, and the case was fabricated. Those familiar with the circumstances of this story are in solidarity with Babai and say that the Koreans really turned out to be local bigwigs. Mozhaev wrote statements against offenders, applied to the investigative committee, went to the ataman of the Kuban Cossack army, to the military judge. The judge turned to the investigative committee with Alexander's testimony, it was necessary to wait. But he never got the result. Because the Crimea began.

Ataman Viktor Melnikov sits on a long bench. On it, the sentences of the Cossack court of honor are carried out. Basically, the Cossacks are punished for drunken brawls. They are whipped.

If you turn the bench over, you can find a list of all those who received punishment with the date of execution and the number of lashes. The first on the list is the senior officer A. I. Mozhaev. He received five lashes on September 25, 2012. On October 17 of the same year, a friend of the senior officer Mozhaev, centurion E.E. Ponomarev, received five lashes. On November 26, 2012, Dermenzhi Sh.V. received three lashes. It was these Cossacks who would later form the “Wolf Hundred” and go first to the Crimea, and then to the Donbass.

Alexander went to the Crimea not as a Cossack of the Kuban Cossack army, but as a volunteer, - says the ataman, - The bulk left on February 27, our Cossacks were on the protection of public order in Sevastopol. And he was on bail. We took this into account, and he did not fall into the district order and went as a volunteer. Yevgeny Ponomarev was with him - they didn't take him either. He was a Cossack warrior of a professional Cossack squad. The order was: the Cossack warriors remain in place, provide protection of public order. On March 6, Ponomarev resigned from the squad and, together with Mozhaev, went there. On the one hand, they violated the order of the troops, they did the wrong thing. On the other hand, a sense of patriotism... Winners are not judged. Is there any positive from their participation there? Our Crimea is already a pleasure.

I came to the police to check in and said: I'm leaving for the Crimea. And they tell me they won't let me go anywhere. Me: “Who are you to me? I just came, informed that I was leaving there on the order of the ataman and that was all. I don't have to ask your permission, you can or can't. When I return, we will continue to talk, ”says Babai.

On March 11, he was supposed to go to the neighboring district to get acquainted with the criminal case and sign it. But no changes occurred in him, despite all Mozhaev's attempts to prove his innocence.

On March 8, Babai was already in the Crimea. He could have been detained at the border because he had an outstanding car loan, a written undertaking not to leave, administrative supervision, but he got to the place without any problems. Some sources claim that he crossed the border on a passport younger brother. At that time, many volunteers moved to the Crimea, and later to the Donbass: someone in a fit of patriotic feeling, someone fled from loans, alimony or prosecution, someone expected to earn money or fame.

Couldn't you have waited three days to get to know the file first? I ask.
“Then my case would go to court, and I would be waiting for the trial. And I, after all, have not yet waited for the answer of the Investigative Committee, to which the military judge turned. I didn't need my case to go to court so quickly.
- Did you understand that you were violating the terms of the undertaking not to leave?
- Of course, I understood. I understood that I could be imprisoned. It’s something to them, a man who was sitting on parole. Think it will still sit.
- Because of this, you left for the Crimea?
- Not. I left for Crimea for a different reason. Because it is necessary to protect ... There is an opportunity to join the fraternal people to the fraternal people. The Cossack must first fight, and not sit on his ass in prison and watch his comrades die. The Cossack must first fight, and not sit on his ass in prison and watch his comrades die Even if I had been sitting at that moment, I would have asked to go from there to help fight. I can say that I postponed it all for an indefinite time. Because if I had not delayed, everything would have ended corny with the fact that I would have gone to jail. I would not have a second son, and when the first was born, I would still be in prison.
- Is that why you immediately went to the East of Ukraine after Crimea?
- We know what is going on in Ukraine itself, in Kyiv. Maidan, civilians, policemen are being killed. And here I am sitting in the Crimea. They ask me: “Why aren’t you going home? I say: “Look, you have now joined Russia, everything is fine with you. And what about the rest, our Russian people who stayed there? Our Orthodox, our Slavs. How? Will they imitate and relearn how to live the way the West tells them? We need to return the rest, we need to help them return, since they themselves can’t do it. ” The man looked at me and said, "Yes, that's right."

In April 2014, Babai, his friend Yevgeny Ponomarev (call sign Dingo) and other Cossacks formed the Wolf Hundred combat detachment and headed for eastern Ukraine. Babai says that they wanted to continue annexing Russian-speaking territories to Russia. And they moved to Kramatorsk and Slavyansk. It was there that Babai gained fame. Firstly, at first he was mistaken for a Russian officer of the GRU, because in a photograph of the times of the Russian-Georgian conflict, someone saw a bearded man who looked a lot like Babai. It became a sensation - the Russian special services are fighting in the Donbass, Babai's photo has spread around the world media. Later, journalist Simon Ostrovsky found a "GRU officer" and refuted this story: in 2008, Babai was imprisoned in Primorsko-Akhtarsk. Secondly, Igor Girkin's dislike for the media indirectly contributed to the promotion of Babai. And photographers loved Babai for his colorful appearance. He was eloquent and had enough status to comment.

I had no idea what would happen next, - Babai says that all the events that followed the Crimea were unpredictable, and only at the beginning obeyed some kind of logic, - Girkin gave the order that we all go to the end, we can’t stop from there come back alive. Who will not follow orders - I will shoot.

Babai practically does not say anything about his relationship with Girkin, referring to the fact that they did not know each other well:
- Relations with Girkin were built on the principle of "hello, goodbye," says Babai. - As I understand it, Girkin wanted us to go with him to Donetsk. It was impossible to do this. We held two cities - Kramatorsk and Slavyansk. The fights took place there. Girkin, on the other hand, had to gather all the armed forces of the DPR, LPR, Novorossia, restore order along the border, so that it was open, so that we would receive weapons, uniforms, and food. And they didn't do all that. The troops were in Donetsk, and there were Ukrainian mercenaries along the borders. They cut off our food supply. With a normal headquarters and management, it was now possible to be already in Lvov.

Then it seemed wild to me that so much blood was shed, and the cities were abandoned and moved away, - Alexey says about leaving Kramatorsk and Slavyansk. Today I look at it a little differently. The goals have been achieved, Ukraine has not joined NATO, has not joined the EU. She hung. If we moved on, it would all be in ruins. Ukrainians will squabble until they remember whose children they are. Donbass is a weight on the leg of Ukraine, with which it will not go anywhere.
- Don't you think it's some kind of cynical weight? At the cost of war, a large number of victims, killed children, which you are talking about.
- No, I don't think so. I understand all this, Dostoevsky, the tear of a child. I have three sons, I understand that. Brzezinski said that there can be no Russia without Ukraine. If Ukraine is in NATO, then American "Patriots" and everything else will stand near Belgorod. The population of 40 million will turn into a real army, they will be taught, armed and paid.
- And they will revive fascism there, - adds Babai.
- And how many then there will be these tears? - Alexey asks rhetorically.

“The Cossacks, of course, are very different. Only, as I already wrote, for some reason, the “Cossack units”, as if on the battlefield, are turning into “Makhnovist gangs”, loudly screaming in the rear about their “Cossack military spirit”, but stubbornly avoiding real battles to any extent. difficult situation”, - this is how Igor Girkin commented on the departure of Babai and other Cossacks after the surrender of Kramatorsk and Slavyansk. He simply called them deserters. Babai claims that the main reason for the departure of the "Wolf Pack" from the firing positions was disagreement with Girkin's decisions, the desire to act independently. In official video messages, Babai stated that he did not desert anywhere, but left to recruit volunteers after Girkin's order to leave the city. A source who is well acquainted with the situation in the Donbass suggests that the main reason for Babai’s departure to Crimea was not so much a desire for some kind of autonomy or cowardly desertion, but rather “understanding” - they already realized then that resolving issues about the fate of the East of Ukraine was passing from the competence warlords into the area of political settlement, and it is life-threatening to oppose it. The fates of the field commanders from the LPR, who were already killed in peacetime, who did not show a sufficient level of “understanding” and tractability, confirm this hypothesis.

And here we are. In a small office hung with flags of the DPR and Russia. Walkie-talkies creak, someone periodically glances through binoculars, helmets gather dust on the shelves. More enterprising activists of the "Russian Spring" occupied important posts and came to success. And Babai collects money through Komsomolskaya Pravda, because there is nothing to send children to school.
- Why didn't you eventually take some leading post in the DPR? I ask.
- HM. In that lair, you can stay without a head. Baba answers.
- Don't you feel like you've just been leaked?
- Yes, of course there is. Why do they need patriots there when they have money pouring in. They want money and power. The drain began from Kramatorsk itself.

Alexei and Babai are convinced that the war is not over, and they are simply waiting for the moment to take up arms again. They seem to have nothing much to do in peaceful Belorechensk. And it seems to me that internally they are not at all opposed to the war returning.

Pasha sat quietly on the sofa all the time of our conversation. He is from Donetsk, fought in the militia, but became disillusioned and moved to Russia.

The internal situation there is quite interesting, - Pasha joins in the conversation, - Comrade Zakharchenko simply gave instructions for the destruction of the Donetsk Cossacks, they were disarmed. Because the Cossacks did not allow fraud to be carried out.

Zakharchenko is Akhmetov's henchman. A simple explanation, - Babai says sharply.

It's not even the main thing. So they received this power, territory, huge help from Russia. And this syndrome worked - to profit while there is an opportunity. When all these schemes began, the Minsk agreements, everyone who really wanted the best for the Donbass, who fought and was at the forefront - 90 percent left for Russia. Because they saw that what they fought for just twisted and returned to its place. The cops returned to their former positions - the same bribe-takers, prosecutors are returning to their former positions. In Mariupol, they received valuable instructions from the dill and returned to work allegedly for the DPR, but you yourself understand who they will work for there. Obviously not in favor of the DNR.

And here we are. Pasha has moved, he is trying to get a work permit, but so far there are problems with this. He says that he has Russian roots, and even as a citizen of Ukraine, he always considered himself Russian.

In short, everyone has phantom pains, - Alexey concludes.

Babai's participation in the war was credited. He fell under an amnesty for the 70th anniversary of the Victory, completely got even with all the problems and is clear before the law. But he didn't shave off his beard. Because what is Babai without a beard?

The grave of Evgeny Ponomarev, a friend of BabaiPhoto: Vlad Moiseev

On August 27, 2014, a new grave appeared at the city Belorechensky cemetery. A year later, a small gray monument was erected on it. On it, in large letters, "Dingo" was displayed - this is the call sign from the time of the war. Yevgeny Ponomarev, a friend of Babai, is buried here, with whom they went to war together.
