Simple and amazing stories of real heroes. Everyone should know their names.

History knows a huge number of people who made outstanding deeds and discoveries, but at the same time remained unnoticed.

website believes that many of them deserve fame and wide recognition. This article contains the stories of seven such heroes - they are all different, but each of them made life on planet Earth a little - or even much - better and happier.

History from Konstantin Paustovsky

“It was the spring of 1912, before the exams, a meeting was arranged in the garden. All the gymnasium students of our class were called to it, except for the Jews. The Jews were not supposed to know anything about this meeting.

At the meeting, it was decided that the best students from Russians and Poles should grab the four in exams at least in one subject so as not to receive a gold medal. We decided to give all the gold medals to the Jews. Without these medals, they were not admitted to the university.

We have sworn to keep this decision confidential. To the credit of our class, we did not let it slip, neither then nor after, when we were already university students. Now I break this oath, because almost none of my schoolmates are left alive. Most of them died during the great wars that my generation experienced. Only a few people survived."

A world without nuclear war

September 26, 1983 lieutenant colonel Stanislav Petrov was on duty at Serpukhov-15, a secret bunker near Moscow, and was busy monitoring the satellite system of the Soviet Union. Shortly after midnight, one of the satellites signaled to Moscow that the US was launching 5 ballistic missiles at Russia. The entire responsibility at that moment fell on the forty-four-year-old lieutenant colonel: he had to decide how to respond to this signal.

The alarm sounded at a difficult time, relations between the USSR and America were strained, but Petrov decided that it was false and refused to take any retaliatory measures. Thus, he prevented a possible nuclear catastrophe - the signal really turned out to be false.

Vasily Arkhipov, an officer in the Russian Navy, also once made a decision that saved the world. During the Caribbean Crisis, he prevented the launch of a nuclear torpedo. The Soviet submarine B-59 was surrounded near Cuba by eleven American destroyers and the aircraft carrier Randolph. Despite the fact that it took place in neutral waters, the Americans used depth charges against the boat to force it to rise to the surface.

The submarine commander, Valentin Savitsky, prepared to launch a nuclear torpedo in return. However, the senior on board Arkhipov showed restraint, drew attention to the signals from the American ships and stopped Savitsky. The signal "Stop the provocation" was sent from the boat, after which the American military forces were withdrawn and the situation was somewhat defused.

The man with the golden hand

Australian at thirteen James Harrison had undergone major breast surgery and was in urgent need of about 13 liters of donated blood. After the operation, he was in the hospital for three months. Realizing that donating blood saved his life, he made a promise to start donating blood as soon as he turned 18.

As soon as Harrison reached the age required to donate blood, he immediately went to the Red Cross blood donation site. It was there that it turned out that his blood is unique in its kind, since its plasma contains special antibodies, thanks to which it is possible to prevent the Rhesus conflict of a pregnant mother with her fetus. Without these antibodies, the Rh conflict leads to a minimum of anemia and jaundice in the child, a maximum to stillbirth.

When James was told what exactly was found in his blood, he asked only one question. He asked how often you can donate blood.
Since then, every three weeks, James Harrison comes to a medical center near his home and donates exactly 400 milliliters of blood. To date, he has donated about 377 liters of blood.
In the 56 years since his first donation, he has donated blood and blood components almost 1,000 times and saved about 2,000,000 children and their young mothers.

Polish Schindler

Eugene Lazowski was a Polish doctor who saved thousands of Jews during the Holocaust. Thanks to the discovery of his friend, Dr. Stanislav Matulevich, Lazowski simulated an outbreak of typhus, a dangerous infectious disease. Matulevich discovered that it was possible for a healthy person to be vaccinated with certain bacteria, and then the test results for typhus would be positive, and the person himself would not experience any manifestations of the disease.

The Germans were afraid of typhus because it was highly contagious. At a time when Jews infected with typhus were routinely executed, Lazowski was inoculating the non-Jewish population in the neighborhoods surrounding the ghetto, near the town of Rozvadov. He knew that the Germans would be forced to give up in order to get close to the Jewish settlements, and in the end they simply quarantined the area. This saved approximately 8,000 Polish Jews from certain death in concentration camps.

The scientist who saved millions of lives

American biologist Maurice Ralph Guilleman created 36 vaccines in his lifetime - more than any other scientist in the world. Of the fourteen vaccines that are now in general use, he invented 8, including those for measles, meningitis, chickenpox, hepatitis A and B.

In addition, Gilleman was the first person to determine how the flu virus mutates. Almost single-handedly, he worked to develop a vaccine that prevented the 1957 Asian influenza outbreak from becoming a repeat of the 1918 Spanish pandemic that killed 20 million people worldwide.

Donor of immortal cells

African American Henrietta Lacks died of cancer in 1951 at the age of thirty-one. However, she became the donor of the cellular material that allowed Dr. George Otto Gay to create the first ever immortal human cell line, known as the HeLa line. "Immortality" meant that these cells did not die after a few divisions, which means that they could be used to conduct many medical experiments and studies.

In 1954, the HeLa cell strain was used by Jonas Sok to develop a polio vaccine. In 1955, HeLa became the first successfully cloned human cells. Demand for these cages grew rapidly. They were put into mass production and sent to scientists around the world to study cancer, AIDS, the effects of radiation and other diseases. Now scientists are growing about 20 tons of Henrietta cells, there are almost 11,000 patents related to them.

Inventor of the seat belt

July 10, 1962 employee of the Volvo Corporation Nils Bolin patented his invention - a three-point seat belt. It was the same system that is still used in cars today: it took Bolin just under a year to develop, and it was first introduced on Volvo cars in 1959.

The corporation made the seat belt design free to other automakers, and it soon became a worldwide standard. According to recent studies, Bolin's invention has saved about a million lives during its existence.

What is a person? What are these creatures that live on Earth and call themselves humans? For example, Maxim Gorky argued that "man - that sounds proud". Many believe that man is the highest being on Earth. In this regard, I have a question. If this is true, and man is a higher being, then how many such people live on Earth?

There are so many human robots acting mechanically. Who are they? Are they human beings or not? After all, to tell someone that he is not a man, but a robot is a very big insult. Probably not many people will like it.

So what is a person? When a child is born, it is said that a new person has been born. What happens to him further in the course of the so-called development or maturation? It forms the personality or ego. And what is it? Isn't this a certain set of habits called traits? But character is the stereotypical way of responding to the external and internal influence of the environment. This is a mechanism.

I would like to understand whether a person is a person? We have a body and what is then formed there, that is, a personality. When they talk about a person, they mean his personality, right? They can say about him that he is kind, honest, punctual or envious, irritable, shameless and the like. There are many different definitions of personality, in the view of the majority, a person and a person are one and the same.

But, if a person is a higher being, it sounds proud, then why does he live like that? If we take an unbiased look at how people live, we cannot help but see constant conflicts in relations between people, leading to wars and murders. Can someone call himself a higher being, while destroying another, similar being? Destroying not even because he has some biological need for it. Animals eat each other. We see this in nature. But they don't do it when they're not hungry. They don't have any reason to kill. Man does not feed on man, while the number of people killed by people is enormous. Can such a being call itself supreme?

And if we assume that man is a higher being, can such a being call itself a man? Someone will answer something like this: "Yes, someone kills, but these are not people, these are bandits. I am not like that. I do not do this and will not do it." But is it? Isn't there in every person what is in all of humanity? Doesn't each person contribute to what is happening and has happened on Earth? After all, war, conflict is a consequence of separation, fragmentation of a person's perception of himself, when one fragment of the mind condemns another fragment of it. This is the main cause of conflicts and wars. But isn't this division in each of us? Don't each of us bring this division into the world we live in? Is it possible to call yourself a man when you are internally divided?

Maybe you are just afraid of the law, punishment, and therefore do not bring your internal and external conflicts to something so punishable? But the essence and cause of any conflict is the same. This is an internal psychological separation. Let's say I have beliefs that I don't want to change. At the same time, I was not attracted, I did not sit, and I had no special cases with the law. But does this mean that I have not contributed to the various conflicts and wars taking place now in various parts of the globe? Are not their causes the same convictions that not only do not want to part with, but also impose them by force on others?

Here I am sitting in front of the TV, watching a report on another armed conflict and saying: "What is this going on? This must be stopped, where is the government looking?" Am I not the same? Do I easily part with my beliefs? Has he never tried to impose them on someone else? So what is a person?

Human beings have a great ability to reproduce and survive. Many species of animals and plants could not survive in the changing conditions of life on Earth, or could only survive in certain places where the conditions necessary for them exist. A person survives in a variety of circumstances and conditions. This is one of the distinguishing features of the species - the ability to adapt and survive under changing conditions, not only physical, but also psychological.

At the same time, for some individual person, the living conditions of other people may seem nightmarish and unbearable. He says that it is better not to live at all than to live in such conditions. If he talks to these other people, he can find out that they are quite satisfied with the way they live, they are used to it and, in principle, do not want to change anything. A person can adapt to anything. It seems to me that there is nothing to which a person could not adapt. That is, the peculiarity of the species is that it is very survivable. But this is life in hell. It's a hell of a life if you look at it with an open mind.

Yes, a person gets used to anything - both in war and in prison, in the most unbearable and insane conditions, he still finds his pleasures and sorrows. At the same time, he says that this is how it should be, that it cannot be otherwise. A person gets used to anything, but if you look at how people live with an open mind, is such a life worthy of a higher being? And then the question arises: who created such creatures and doomed them to such a life? If man is a higher being, is that how he should live? Or does the person perform some completely different role? And his amazing survival, adaptability, unwillingness to consciously change himself is necessary for nature for some purpose? After all, if nature did not like this, then this species would not develop in this way. So it suits her for some reason. But does it suit the person himself?

If we look with an open mind, we see that most people do not want anything else. Yes, many will say that there are a lot of terrible, bad things around, but very few people are ready for really serious changes in their lives. Not just talk, but action. So what is this look? What is it - a man? Maybe it's just a human possibility? Maybe it's just an opportunity to really become human? Just as a butterfly is born from a chrysalis, so, perhaps, from what is now called "man", a really Man is born? Maybe each of us has the opportunity to become a Human, but does not use it, believing that he already is? But then what is man now?

What we have? First, the body. The body makes it possible to be in the material world: move around, do something, see, hear, feel at least what is directly related to this material world. But what is in the body that governs it? What will psychologists say about this, for example? Psychologists will talk about personality, its formation, features, characteristics, factors influencing it. They will give many definitions of personality and ways to describe it. There are many classifications that describe what is in the body, that is, a person.

What is a personality? They say that you still have to become a person. The teenager is told: "You are not a person yet, but you can become one". There are certain ideas about what a real person is. There are, for example, ideas about what the real personality of a man, the real personality of a woman, is. It is on them that they are guided in education. Education itself is the formation of these personality traits, character traits. So what is formed in the body: a person or a personality? In my opinion, this is a very important issue. As you can see, I don't take it for granted that a person is a person. I guess a person is something else entirely. Therefore, I ask: what is brought up in a child? And it seems to me that it is the personality that is brought up. Personality as a set of certain ideas, habits, beliefs, traits and characteristics that allow something to form in this body that is a personality, and then this personality to enter the social environment.

The country needs workers and soldiers. Thus, the child becomes another worker or soldier of society. So who is raising the child: parents or society? I have a question. To whom does the child belong? It seems that to parents, but it is through parents that what society needs is brought up and instilled. Parents are already members of society. Now they already have a certain body in which they need to educate, create a personality that will become another member of society. So who does this person belong to: parents or society? And the next question: who owns the parents? Some may say that they belong to no one. But, if we look at it with an open mind, we will see that everything that is usually called a person by the majority is a person, and a person is a certain combination of what is given by society. There is nothing there except what is in society. This is a certain fragment of society, which is called a personality.

So what is a person? What is a personality? Does a person want to become a person?

What is a personality?

It is simply a fragment of a society in which certain views, beliefs, opinions and beliefs that exist in a particular structure of society are somehow concentrated. Is the personality then something individual? What happens when such a person disappears?

You probably know how a car is assembled. The different parts of which it consists are taken, then they are assembled. And it becomes a car. And if I take and systematically dismantle all this, which is called a car, into parts, and then I smash them to different places, can I say that this set of disparate parts is a car? There was just a car. Now it is no longer there, there is just a set of some parts. Can you call it a car?

So what is personality? When various fragments of some beliefs, beliefs, thoughts are concentrated in one place, say, in the body, as well as in the mind, all this is called a person, a person. But if you take what is called a personality and decompose it into its constituent parts, that is, into various beliefs, beliefs, opinions of which it consists. What will be left? Is there anything left? Let's take a specific person. Let's say she has beliefs. Each of them I will take, select and set aside. She has some beliefs. I'll take them, pick them out and put them aside. Then she has some preferences, for example, of a physical nature. I will also select them and put them aside. What will be left? I took and decomposed this personality into its component parts.

Now I will return each of these parts to the source from which it came. For example, a person is strongly convinced that only communism can save the country. He has such a strong conviction because he is a communist. I take this conviction and return it to the one who is its owner and creator, that is, to the communist society. Then we take some more conviction from him. For example, that a woman should lead a man. Or vice versa, a man should lead a woman. I take that belief again and put it back where it came from.

Do you think I can find all the sources where these beliefs come from? These are certain parts of society. Certain beliefs are concentrated in some specific fragments of a given society, that is, in some groups of people who bear these beliefs. Thus, any person can be decomposed into its component parts, and these parts can be returned to where they were taken from. As a result of this, what will remain in the body? I do not mean the physiology of the body, but the psychology of the individual.

Man is called a social animal. So: we see that in a person there really is social, that is, what came from society, and there is what is from the animal. And if we take and remove everything that came from the society, and this is the personality, then there will be just an animal walking on two legs.

We have said that the mind is the headquarters of personality formation. It contains certain ideas, beliefs, beliefs, and so on. Then the mind begins to use the heart, the emotional sphere, to saturate all these ideas with energy. And what do we have then? Social animal? But usually an animal kills another animal only when it is hungry, when instinct makes it look for food. A human being, on the other hand, can kill another person not because of hunger, but because of some other considerations that were born in his personality. So what does this social "superstructure" give, that is, personality, does it make a person more humane compared to an ordinary animal?

So, look at the evolution that a human being made when he passed from the animal state to the state of a social animal. The animal has no beliefs, so it cannot kill because of beliefs. It can only kill when it is hungry. Personality will kill because of beliefs. For example, because of the belief that she is the strongest, or because of her desire to own something: a woman, a man, a city, position, status, a car, an enterprise, or something else.

Physiological hunger is satisfied by a certain amount of food. Personal hunger is insatiable. Injured pride, jealousy, anger, resentment - this is a reaction of a person to unsatisfied desires, for the sake of satisfying which she can kill others. And doing it thoughtfully. A man commits murder deliberately. Who else on earth commits murder on purpose?

Let's take the war. Wars take a lot of lives. Don't generals consider how best to destroy the enemy? This is an organized murder, and it takes a huge number of lives. Of course, we can say that this does not apply to me personally. I didn't kill anyone, and I don't intend to. But don't each of us carry division and conflict in our personality?

The great Charles Darwin at one time put forward a very interesting theory, which, according to the scientist, could perfectly explain all the unclear questions related to the origin of species, including answering the burning question of the origin of man. Far-sighted materialistic scientists, having at their disposal such a wonderful weapon in the fight against the Christian doctrine of Creation, immediately practically elevated Darwin's theory to the rank of an axiom and immutable truth.

However, now we will not enter into any disputes about how everything that exists on Earth, including man, happened. We are more interested in another question: What makes a person a Human...

Man is, in essence, just a highly organized animal with a mind. But is there something that distinguishes humans from primates? So what is it anyway? What does Let's analyze some opinions on this matter.

The ability to learn is what makes a person human. Indeed, the ability to learn favorably distinguishes a person from highly organized animals - this is how it seems at first glance. But very many dog owners, trainers and tamers will not agree with this statement, confirming the correctness of their words with the numerous achievements of their pets. Moreover, there are computer programs capable of self-learning, and this cannot even be called alive.

It is only human nature to think. Maybe. But if you take a closer look at the behavior of many animals, birds and even insects and remember that not a single scientist in the world has yet proven otherwise, we can assume that our smaller brothers can also think...

Perhaps society makes the man? Yes, society is a great force that can influence the thoughts and actions of each individual person. But this also does not always happen. How then do outcasts and hermits turn out? After all, if society makes a person, then everyone should be the same?

Another question that worries the minds of many is the question of morality. It is precisely morality, as well as the ability for creativity and Love, as it seems, that distinguishes a person from highly organized animals. In this regard, too, not everything is clear. It is believed that only an educated person can be moral. But does education make a person moral? You can answer this question simply by looking around. Surely in the life of every person there have been brilliantly educated people who have excellent manners, are pleasant in communication, well-dressed, but at the same time are able to betray and, in order to achieve their goals, literally go through the bones of those around them. Does education make a person moral? Alas, that would be too easy...

Love and Creativity - that's actually what makes a person a Human. Only this can be peculiar only to a person from the whole diversity of Creation. It is these qualities that bring a person closer to the Creator. “And God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; He created them male and female” (Genesis 1:27).

Elsewhere (1 John 4:8) in the Scriptures we find wonderful words: "God is Love." So, it is the manifestation of Love that gives a person the right to this high title? Man is the best of all the Creations of the Lord, and the Lord loved us to such an extent that He sacrificed His Son so that we would have a chance to be saved and become His Children. Great, great Love, which each of us is able to recognize, makes us related to the Creator, and therefore makes a person a Human...

It brings a person closer to the Lord, therefore, makes it possible for creativity, which is endowed only by a person and none of the animals. But here it must be borne in mind that the Creativity of God is primary. He creates from nothing. Human creativity is secondary, because works of art are created only on the basis of what is around or in the human heart...

Of course, all the arguments on these topics may seem very controversial, like any philosophical conclusions, but they can be regarded as a good attempt to get closer to the answer to one of the most exciting questions of all people: Who am I? Where? What for?

A message that someone is negligent in keeping a commandment that many do not keep

Unfortunately, there are a number of commandments that are so neglected in some communities that if some Jews do not fulfill them, no one condemns them. However, if we say that a person is negligent in keeping this kind of commandment, we will be guilty of committing a sin. lashon-ara.

Eliezer does not understand the importance of Torah study and rarely sits down to study. It is forbidden to tell other people about it, even if many people around are negligent in fulfilling this commandment.

Clara told a fictional story about her heroic act to a group of friends. Dora knows that most of the story is a deliberate distortion of reality, that is, in fact, the narrator's fantasy. Dora really wants to bring Clara to clean water so that everyone knows that she is a liar, but she is forbidden to do so. Moreover, Dora is forbidden to say that not the whole story is true - if no one benefits from such a statement. Therefore, any Dora comment on the topic of Clara's story - lashon-ara.

A simple person who keeps the commandments behaves carefully in relation to them so as not to violate any of them, but sometimes he also has breakdowns. If we see that he made a mistake, but we consider it possible to justify him (judging by his actions from the good side) - we are obliged to judge him favorably. In such a case, we are prohibited from informing others of his wrongdoing. Perhaps he does not realize that this or that action is forbidden, and therefore repeats it from time to time; those. It's all about basic ignorance. Maybe he does not realize the severity of his violation. Or, for example, he believes that the law allows doing this, but some people have taken on additional restrictions that are not at all necessary; he, not intending to act to the fullest extent, chose an easier line of behavior for himself - and does not understand that he is thereby violating the law.

We are obligated to judge a person who keeps the commandments solely from a justifying standpoint. And if we are left in doubt as to the true causes of his reprehensible behavior, we must assume that there are some factors, unknown to us, that caused him to do so, and if they were known to us, we would excuse him. Moreover, we are forbidden to dislike this person because of his mistakes.

Shayna Friedman keeps the commandments, but doesn't dress modestly enough. If someone explains to Sheina that modesty in dress is not only commendable, but is an essential element of living according to the Torah, then she will dress differently. Her friend Paula Zbarskaya is forbidden to humiliate Shayna by telling others that she dresses immodestly. Polya will achieve more if she talks to Shayna in person.

Mr. Berger keeps the laws of the Sabbath. But since he never seriously studied in the Jewish educational system, he is not familiar with many of the subtle details of the Sabbath prohibitions. His acquaintance, Herr Neumann, notes that Berger violated the sanctity of the Sabbath in some detail. He is not allowed to talk about it to others. Instead, Neumann should talk tactfully with Berger, showing him how to observe the Sabbath properly.
