Analysis of Voznesensky's poem "Saga"

Probably the most heartfelt song about tragic love was performed in the rock opera Juno and Avos. This is the romance “I will never forget you”, for which Andrey Andreevich Voznesensky wrote poetry in 1977. As well as possible, this poem describes the feelings of the heroes of a rock opera, but it speaks even more about the experiences of the poet himself.

It is known that for seven years Andrei Andreevich had an affair with actress Tatyana Lavrova. It was a forbidden feeling, since both lovers had legal spouses. The attraction was so strong that they could not resist it. But sooner or later, in a relationship between a man and a woman, there comes a moment when passion becomes destructive, brings more suffering than joy, and literally breaks life. Despite the fact that Voznesensky and Lavrova truly loved each other, they had to part.

This is what the Saga is about. In it, the poet speaks in the first person. Talking about a difficult farewell, the poet describes in detail each step of the lyrical hero:

Each stanza, with the exception of the first and penultimate, ends with an epiphora - the phrase "I will never see you." This constant repetition resembles a prayer and increases the feeling of melancholy and hopelessness. The lyrical hero even exclaims: “God Almighty!”

Undoubtedly, it is very difficult for a hero to leave his beloved. He seeks to protect her from pain, takes care of her health (“shielding you from a cold”), but cannot stay with her, despite the fact that this causes her no less suffering. For the last time, he gazes into those lovely eyes. Here the poet uses an unusual metaphor, comparing them to ripe berries:

Inspired by the love story of Maria de la Concepción, Marcella Argüello (Conchita) and Nikolai Rezanov, Voznesensky (by no means the first in world literature) wrote this poem, which runs like a refrain through the famous rock opera Juno and Avos by composer Alexei Rybnikov. In the 80s, Mark Zakharov's performance "Juno and Avos" in Lenkom became a real sensation, and the role of Rezanov became the star role of actor Nikolai Karachentsov.

Of course, in life, everything happened not quite the way it happened in a rock opera. Nikolai Petrovich Rezanov(Rezanov, emphasis on the second syllable), an outstanding statesman of the times of Catherine and Paul, a chamberlain at the court of Alexander, at the very beginning of the 19th century, made a heroic attempt to strengthen the position of the Russian colonies in North America. It was for this purpose that the first circumnavigation of the Russians in 1803-1806 was organized. on the ships "Nadezhda" and "Neva", known to us as "the journey of Kruzenshtern and Lisyansky". What we know much less is that the true inspirer and organizer of this project was Nikolai Rezanov, and it was him that Alexander I appointed the leader of the expedition, while captains Kruzenshtern and Lisyansky were responsible, quite naturally, for the technical side - for navigation.

Relations between the high-ranking emissary of the emperor and the naval officers did not work out. In conditions when the teams were subordinate to Kruzenshtern and Lisyansky, thousands of miles from St. Petersburg, things actually came to a riot. From Rezanov's letter:

... "Who signed?". - I answered: "Our sovereign Alexander" - "But who wrote?" “I don't know,” I said. “I don’t know,” Lisyansky shouted, “we want to know who wrote, but we know to sign that he will sign everything” ...

The swearing continued, and I was forced, avoiding further insolence, no matter how cruelly I had to pass the equator, without using the air, without going anywhere, until the end of the journey and upon arrival in Kamchatka, I left my cabin for the first time.

In Kamchatka, with the help of the governor and soldiers, the rebellion was extinguished, the officers pleaded guilty and asked for forgiveness, and Rezanov generously forgave the future admiral and hero ...

And then followed the transition to the Japanese Islands, because one of Rezanov's missions was the official embassy to then tightly closed Japan. However, this diplomatic mission ended in complete failure: “The Lord of Japan is extremely surprised by the arrival of the Russian embassy; the emperor cannot accept the embassy, ​​and does not want correspondence and trade with the Russians and asks the ambassador to leave Japan. The Kuril Islands and Sakhalin were already a stumbling block then.

Alaska, Russian America. We still cannot really master Siberia, let alone Alaska, and even 200 years ago ... In short, in order to save several thousand people from starvation, Rezanov decides to immediately descend to California - at that time Spanish. Urgently bought from an Englishman by the name of Woolf, the Juno, which had entered the port for minor repairs, headed south to enter San Francisco Bay in April 1806.

And now, after Japan, having sent Kruzenshtern to the Indian Ocean and further around Europe to St. Petersburg, Nikolai Rezanov ended up in America.

There they met, Rezanov and Conchita.

A Russian diplomat and courtier, superbly educated, with secular manners, who just then turned 42 years old, a widower, who had buried his young wife for three and a half years (Anna Shelikhova, the daughter of a wealthy but ignorant founder of Russian settlements in America, married Rezanov in at the age of 15, gave birth to his son and daughter Olga - and died a few days after giving birth, without having lived with her husband for eight years; Rezanov: “Eight years of our marriage gave me a taste of all the happiness of this life, as if in order to poison her with the loss finally the rest of my days.

It was not at all difficult for a high-society Petersburger to turn the head of a young provincial beauty. She fell in love - and that says it all. Despite the initial opposition of the girl's parents, the marriage proposal was accepted: Conchita, in her love, was ready to go to the end.

The engagement took place, and it was decided to postpone the wedding for a couple of years, until permission from church authorities was received.

But let's not forget that the main goal of Rezanov, who was annoyed by the failure of the mission in Japan, was still to ensure Russian settlements in Alaska. Was his love so sincere? Hardly... From the report of N. P. Rezanov to St. Petersburg:

Seeing that my situation was not improving, expecting big troubles from day to day and not having the slightest hope for my own people, I decided to change my politeness in a serious tone. Daily courting the Gishpan beauty, I noticed her enterprising character, unlimited ambition, which, at the age of fifteen, already only one of her whole family made her homeland unpleasant ...

They [Conchita's parents - V.A.] resorted to the missionaries, they did not know what to decide on. They took poor Concepsia to church, confessed her, persuaded her to refuse, but her determination finally calmed everyone. The holy fathers left the permission of the Roman See, and if I could not complete my marriage, then I made a conditional act and forced us to be engaged, then it was agreed that this should be a secret until the permission of the Pope. A true statesman, Rezanov insists on organizing a Russian settlement north of San Francisco (Fort Ross). Moreover, he sees the prospect of seizing all of her California possessions from Spain. And, of course, the immediate task - to supply Russian America with food - turned out to be brilliantly solved in the end. At the beginning of the summer, the Juno and the very small ship Avos left the shores of California.

What happened next? Further: Rezanov, at his own peril and risk, orders the commanders of these ships to carry out an armed attack on the Japanese settlements of the Kuril Islands in order to secure their belonging to Russia. He himself went through Okhotsk and Irkutsk to Petersburg. Further: an accident occurred near Krasnoyarsk - a fall from a horse on a winter road. In early March 1807, Nikolai Rezanov died in Krasnoyarsk and was buried there.

Shortly before his death, in one of his last letters (to M. M. Buldakov), Rezanov dotted the “and”:

From my California report, my friend, do not consider me an anemone. You have my love in Nevsky under a piece of marble, and here is the result of enthusiasm and a new sacrifice to the Fatherland. ... Conchita found out about his death a year later. She never married, devoting herself to charity and earning the nickname "Blessed" among the local population.

45 years after her acquaintance with Rezanov, in 1851, she became the first nun of the first convent in California. In December 1857, Conchita died. She was then almost 67 years old.

The grave of Anna Rezanova is still located in the Nevsky Lavra (“My love is with you in Nevsky under a piece of marble ...”). In America, the grave of Conchita is carefully preserved: in the cemetery of St. Dominica in California, at the tombstone, there are always many flowers.

Rezanov's grave in Krasnoyarsk was already lost in Soviet times. Lost forever: when the Americans arrived in Krasnoyarsk to bow to the ashes of Nikolai Rezanov and leave a handful of earth from the burial place of Conchita on his grave, no efforts of local historians helped to determine the last refuge of a high-ranking Russian diplomat.

"Juno and Avos" is one of the most famous Russian rock operas by the composer Alexei Rybnikov based on the verses of the poet Andrei Voznesensky. The premiere took place on July 9, 1981 on the stage of the Moscow Lenin Komsomol Theater (director Mark Zakharov, choreography by Vladimir Vasiliev, artist Oleg Sheintsis), whose repertoire still includes the play. The name of the performance uses the names of two sailing ships, the Juno and Avos, on which the expedition of the Russian traveler, Count Nikolai Rezanov, sailed. The main roles were played by Nikolai Karachentsov (Count Rezanov), Elena Shanina (Conchita), Alexander Abdulov (Federico).

The plot was based on the romantic love story of Nikolai Rezanov and the daughter of the governor of San Francisco, Maria de la Concepción Marcella Arguello. Nikolai Petrovich Rezanov, chamberlain of His Majesty's court, one of the leaders of the first Russian round-the-world expedition, arrived in California in 1806 in order to replenish food supplies for the Russian colony in Alaska. The well-educated and well-bred commander managed to charm the daughter of the commandant of the San Francisco fortress, the beautiful Concepcia de Arguello (Conchita). The engagement took place. The wedding was not predetermined, because an agreement was reached: the groom would return to St. Petersburg and ask for the petition of his emperor before the Pope of Rome for the desired marriage with a Catholic. Nikolai Petrovich himself promised Conchita and her parents that two years would be enough for this, after which he would return and they would find family happiness. However, on the way he fell seriously ill and died in Krasnoyarsk at the age of 42. Conchita did not believe the information that reached her about the death of the groom. Only in 1842, the English traveler George Simpson, arriving in San Francisco, told her the exact details of his death. Believing in his death only thirty-five years later, she took a vow of silence, and a few years later she was tonsured in a Dominican monastery in Monterey, where she spent almost two decades and died in 1857.

After another two centuries, there was a symbolic act of reunion of lovers. On October 28, 2000, in Krasnoyarsk, at the alleged burial place of N.P. Rezanov at the Trinity Cemetery, a memorial service and the opening of the monument took place. The monument is a white cross, on one side of which is written “Nikolai Petrovich Rezanov. 1764-1807. I will never forget you”, and on the other - “Maria Concepción de Argüello. 1791-1857. I will never see you." The memorial service was attended by the Sheriff of Monterey (California, USA) Harry Brown. The sheriff scattered the soil from Conchita's grave on Rezanov's grave, and in return took the earth from Rezanov's grave to scatter it on the grave of Concepcia de Argüello.

This sublimely tragic love story inspired Andrei Voznesensky to create the poem "Avos" in 1970, which later served as the basis for the libretto of a rock opera. Naturally, many arias and scenes had to be written for a theatrical production. In the libretto of the opera, the poet also included the poem "Saga" ("You will wake me up at dawn ..."), written by him in 1977. Since the term "rock opera" was banned at that time (like rock music in general), the authors wrote under the title of the work: "modern opera".
