Continuation: Cartoon characters Chuggington:

Who would have thought back in 1984 that a small children's television show about the adventures of transport on the railway of the fictional Island of Sodor would last more than 30 years, win millions of fans around the world and turn into a huge entertainment industry - theme parks, annual holidays, toys, etc.

"Thomas and Friends" is today considered a British cultural treasure, despite the fact that the history of the children's series is largely a series of accidents. In the late 70s, television producer Britt Ellcroft was preparing material for a documentary about an old English railway. This road was mentioned in a series of popular children's books "Railway Stories" by Wilbert Awdry - after reading one of them, Ellcroft became interested in the others, and the idea came to her: why not make a children's television show based on these stories? The first 50 thousand pounds she collected went only to purchase the rights to film “Railway Stories”; for the next few years, the producer was looking for money for the series itself.

In 1984, the first series of Thomas and Friends aired on British TV. The show was made using object animation: toy trees, bridges, roads, buildings, artificial reservoirs. For the characters, toy trains were used, controlled by a remote control; the faces of the trains were removable and changed in accordance with the mood of the characters. Already in the first season, the text behind the scenes was read by the guest star, Ringo Starr. This later became a tradition: the narrators over the years were George Carlin, Alec Baldwin and Pierce Brosnan.

In 2009, the way Thomas & Friends was made changed dramatically, moving away from action figures in favor of cheaper, easier-to-handle computer animation.

“Thomas and Friends” has been on the air for 18 seasons - that’s almost half a thousand episodes. The new season will appear on screens this summer. Over the years of its existence, the show has acquired its own mythology and gone beyond the television format. These are theme parks in the UK and Japan that welcome millions of visitors every year. These are many individual attractions around the world. And of course - toys: railways from the series (there are several of them) and characters - trains, airplanes and other cars, little people.

The number of toy trains sold over the years of the show's existence is more than 16 million. You can also buy them in Ukraine. These are the Collectible Metal Series, the Motorized Plastic Series and a special series for children over one year old, in which the trains are made with fun special effects. In addition to the toy trains, the series also features railway sets - with various motion switches, tunnels and other elements replicating the roads of Sodor.

The popularity of the series "Thomas and Friends" in the 80s went beyond the UK - it began to be shown in the USA, Japan and further around the world. This animated series was broadcast on Ukrainian TV in the mid-90s - from the first episodes. And now Ukrainian viewers can watch Thomas and Friends every day on the Plus Plus channel at 10:55.

The seemingly simple idea of an animated series - trains with a human face, routine on the railway - in fact, contains many didactic messages not only for children, but also for adults. Sodor is the image of any community where there are good and bad, where newcomers have to adapt, where problems must be solved together. Each character - be it a locomotive, a carriage or another vehicle - has its own character and memorable appearance. In total, there were about 90 characters in the animated series, more than 30 of which are presented in the new collection of toy trains in the collectible series. Among all the characters, there are ten main ones at the moment.

10 main characters of the animated series "Thomas and His Friends"

Blue locomotive number 1, the pride and leader of the engines of the North Western Railway of the Island of Sodor. He gets into awkward situations because of his temper and impatience, but quickly moves away. The main character of the animated series and books "Railway Stories", however, he was not in the very first story of Wilbert Audrey. Toy Thomas is the most popular model among all the characters in the animated series.

Percy

A cheerful and slightly clumsy locomotive. Percy holds the record for the most accidents in the entire animated series. The appearance of this engine caused the author of Railway Stories, Wilbert Awdry, to argue heatedly with the illustrator. The writer insisted that Percy should look more like a real locomotive, rather than "a green caterpillar with red stripes." The last line later appeared in the animated series when Thomas joked with Percy.

Red engine number 5. A jack of all trades on the railroad, James gets into trouble because of his overconfidence. He loves to show off his bright color.

Green locomotive number 3. Its peculiarity is its love of nature. Driving through the forest, Henry can stay there for a long time, forgetting about his business. But Henry not only contemplates nature: if the trees are damaged by a storm, he will be the first to come to restore the planting.

The fastest, largest and most powerful engine from the entire Thomas company. But Gordon does not boast of his size - he is kind-hearted and will always defend smaller engines.

A cheerful freight locomotive from the Misty Island. Together with his comrades Bash and Dash, he transports minerals and materials. Ferdinand's specialty is wood and oil. In the animated series, this engine appears from episode to episode, but always comes to the fore.

The private locomotive of the Earl and Countess of Boxford, Spencer has manners, but likes to turn up his nose, which usually ends not in his favor. Too proud to be friends with ordinary engines, Spencer also always enters into rivalry with Thomas.

An old-fashioned steam tram in appearance and character. The design for Toby was borrowed from a car that was used on the road until the 1920s. He is one of the few characters to have his own song in the animated series.

The only girl engine on the North-Western Railway team. Emily is a hand-drawn green and gold model of a real Stirling Single locomotive from the late 19th century. Interestingly, in the English-language animated series, Emily speaks with a slight Scottish accent.

Master of causing trouble on the Island of Sodor. Working on diesel fuel, he dislikes all engines - naturally, Thomas and his friends, first of all. A leader among other diesel trains, this character incites everyone against everyone. It is because of Diesel 10 that accidents most often occur in Sodor. Despite his nasty character, the toy Diesel 10 is no less popular with children than Thomas.

About the cartoon "Chuggington Engines"

Production: Ludorum plc, BBC

Number of seasons: 4 (in Russian I was able to find only two, and even then incomplete. If anyone knows where the rest are translated, I will be grateful 😉);

Episodes this season: 30 episodes;

Episode duration: 10 minutes;

Plot

In a fabulous Chuggington There live cheerful and friendly little engines. Every day they have a lot to do: a foundry, a sawmill, a quarry, an ice cream factory, a hotel, a farm, a safari park - everywhere they need to be on time, deliver and pick up important cargo.

The engines are very friendly, always ready to help, give tips and advice. Sometimes this comes in handy to young engine trainees Coco, Brewster and Wilson who are just beginning their training in locomotive business.

Every day they face difficulties, learn from their mistakes, help and help each other.

What do you like most?

The cartoon is quite instructive: trainees learn such common truths as: “if you drive more quietly, you will continue to do so,” “you need to obey your elders,” “you cannot leave willfully without the permission of adults,” “there are dangerous places where it is better not to go,” “you need to help each other”, etc.

Very I like the trains themselves- they are very funny and fun, each with a detailed personality, storyline, character and passions.

Disadvantage :)

The cartoon only has one drawback: if your child likes it, get ready for the fact that you will inevitably have to buy toy trains (and, believe me, you won’t get away with just one or two :) And there are also various railways and tracks, depots and suitcases for storing trains...

We were able to “get out” with the rails, but we didn’t “fight off” the trains - we’re putting together a collection :)

The main characters of the cartoon about trains

As the cartoon develops, its main characters also develop, and new ones appear. If in the first season we were familiar with a maximum of 10 engines, and the main attention was paid to 3 trainee engines Coco, Brewster and Wilson, then in the second season the characters are already under 20 and almost all the engines are actively involved in the development of the plot.

So, cartoon characters about trains:

  • Young trains Coco, Brewster and Wilson- the main characters of the cartoon. Children who learn and learn from their mistakes all the subtleties of life and communication;
  • Their wise teacher Donbar;
  • Old steam locomotive Pete- the oldest steam locomotive in the Chuggington depot, working regularly for the benefit of the fabulous city for 150 years!
  • Alvin- grandmother is a locomotive, constantly cares about her appearance and beauty :)
  • Locomotive Speedy McAllister- Pete's friend and a very wise engine;
  • The genius of making ice cream of all kinds - Frostini;
  • Zaffie- a very funny young engine. He knows how to spin around his own axis and constantly gets into some troubles;
  • An electric train that carries passengers - Emary(notable is the fact that for some reason Emery has multi-colored eyes like Woland 🙂 - one eye is blue, the other is green);
  • Very funny twins Hoot And Tutti- the youngest cartoon characters;
  • Harrison- strong and beautiful train;
  • Chazworth- Harrison's friend, a somewhat phlegmatic, but very aesthetic train;
  • Superpoez- a superhero among trains. He knows how to fly and does something that always comes to the rescue at the right moment. In his spare time he acts in films :)
  • Callie - emergency tug, ready at any time to save and get rid of troubles;
  • Hodge - a small engine working in a workshop;
  • Irwin- a locomotive responsible for cleanliness and order in Chuggington;
  • Mtambo- works as a guide in a safari park and tells children about strange animals;
  • In and - dispatcher in charge of the entire depot. Tells who needs to go where and what to do;
