Valery BRYUSOV

Artillery officer Florenty Fedorovich Pavlenkov (1839-1900), having retired in 1866, devoted himself to publishing. A convinced educator, he paid special attention to the publication of books for public education and the promotion of natural science knowledge.
Among the publications of Pavlenkov, the ZhZL series was especially popular.
The ZhZL series of books has been living for 123 years. The first issues began to appear at the end of the nineteenth century. During the existence of the centenarian, more than 1400 volumes were published in it.

Since the 30s of the 20th century, the Molodaya Gvardiya publishing house has been the successor of the glorious undertaking of the largest Russian educator F. F. Pavlenkov, who conceived and founded a biographical library in 1890. The 200-volume (the number indicated by the organizer of the series in the publication prospectus) Pavlenkov's ZhZL library was published from 1890 to 1915 and was a success with readers of all ages, having withstood 40 pre-revolutionary reprints with a total circulation of approximately 1.5 million copies.
Florenty Fedorovich Pavlenkov, who has been engaged in enlightenment, education and book publishing all his life, bequeathed his capital to the device of two thousand free folk reading rooms and libraries in remote Russian villages.
There is also a book in the series dedicated to this remarkable man.

In January 1933, the first issues of the Gorky ZhZL series, published by the Journal and Newspaper Association ("Zhurgaz" arose on the basis of the reorganized "Spark"), laid down on the table for subscribers, marking the second birth of the most extensive and the only universal collection of biographies in our country. M. Gorky is trying to attract the best forces, both Russian and foreign, to cooperate in the creation of the updated ZhZL series: “wonderful” should be written about “remarkable” - this is the main leitmotif. Not everything came true, but the ideas themselves are interesting; "Socrates" and "Beethoven" performed by R. Rolland, "Edison" - G. Wells, "Columbus" - F. Nansen, "Cervantes" - I. Bunin, "Darwin" - K. Timiryazev, "Francis Bacon" - A. Lunacharsky. P. "Pavlenko" was going to write "Shamil", M. Koltsov - "Magellan", B. Tomashevsky - "Pushkin", F. Raskolnikov "Lermontov".
In 1938, the ZhZL series was transferred to the jurisdiction of the Young Guard, the country's central youth publishing house. Since then, this publication has never been interrupted again, even in the harsh years of the Great Patriotic War, when the series was transformed into a modestly designed library "Great people of the Russian people." Its releases (28 books with a total circulation of 855 thousand copies) raised the patriotic spirit, bringing the long-awaited Victory closer.
In recent years, the series has gained a second wind: 50-60 new biographies and reprints are published annually, that is, almost twice as many as in Soviet times.
The ZhZL series occupies a very special place not only in the biography of the Young Guard publishing house, but also in domestic book publishing as a whole.
Along with the Bolshoi Theater in the field of performing arts, the Tretyakov Gallery and the Russian Museum in painting, it is a true national treasure.
ZhZL - a series of books about famous, famous people who lived on earth and left behind a memory to their descendants in the form of cultural, literary, scientific and other values.
The genre of presentation is scientific and artistic. The content of the absolute majority of books meets the three main principles proclaimed by the editors back in the 1950s - scientific authenticity, high literary level and entertaining. At the same time, the first of the above terms has become today the editors of the series, of course, the main and decisive factor in the choice of authors. Many of the authors of this series themselves become its heroes over time. In total, more than 1,400 books have been published in the series with a total circulation of more than 100 million copies.

This illustrious series of books lives on today!

Varlamov A.N.
Andrey Platonov.
- M .: Young Guard, 2011.-546s.

Andrei Platonov (1899-1951), the most mysterious and incorrect Russian writer of the 20th century, passed almost unnoticed by the brilliant literary mirrors of the era. However, in no writer's fate has the national life of Russia manifested itself so sharply, and in no other work has the tragedy of a people orphaned in the revolution expressed itself so deeply and fully. Novels, short stories, short stories, articles, plays by Andrey Platonov, most of which were published many years after his death, became artistically weighty evidence and heartfelt reflection on what happened to Russian people in the great and terrible decades of the past century.

The fate and personality of Platonov were never limited to one literature and are known to the general reader much less than his work. Meanwhile, the circumstances of his life make it possible to see and understand a lot in Platonic books that are difficult to perceive. Aleksey Varlamov, a well-known prose writer and literary historian, presents to the readers' judgment the biography of Andrey Platonov, created on the basis of a significant number of archival documents and texts, including recently discovered ones, traces the creative path and recreates the personal, everyday features of his hero, who, in the words Viktor Nekrasov "I was not a writer in my life, but in my writing work I always remained a man."

Varlamov A.N.
Grigory Rasputin

- M .: Young Guard, 2008. -864 p.

In his work, the author tries to understand the biography of Grigory Rasputin, who is considered one of the darkest and most mysterious figures in Russian history of the twentieth century. Based on previously unknown documents and testimonies of Grigory Rasputin's contemporaries, A. Varlamov tried to answer a number of questions: Rasputin's origin? Was he a German spy? What is so mysterious about his connections with women, and what did he have to do with the whip sect?
In the book, the author expresses the opinion that in Rasputin there was nothing from either the devil or the saint. His fate was such that he turned out to be a historical test that Russia could not withstand.
To date, this is the most complete biography of Rasputin, which uses a huge historical material, new documents, research and newly discovered evidence of contemporaries of that tragic era.

Vlasov L.
Mannerheim

- M.: Young Guard, 2005.-320s.

Mannerheim's line... For many years, this combination was like the crest of a fairy-tale villain, from which impenetrable forests grew on the hero's path, mountain steeps rose up. Even more mysterious and ominous was the figure of the Swedish baron, the creator of a powerful system of fortifications on the Karelian Isthmus, where so much blood of Soviet soldiers was shed in the infamous Winter War (1939-1940). The author of the book, Professor Leonid Vasilyevich Vlasov, on the basis of numerous documents convincingly proves that Marshal and President of Finland Carl Gustav Mannerheim (1867-1951) does not belong to the cohort of great villains and belongs not only to Finnish history. A brilliant officer, faithfully serving the Russian Empire for thirty years, left an indelible mark on the combat past of the Russian army. Paradoxically, while fighting the Soviet Union, he was not an enemy of Russia.

Ganichev Valery
Ushakov Fedor Fedorovich
- M .: Young Guard, 2008.-560s.

Eliseeva O. I.
Catherine the Great

-M.: Young Guard, 2010.-640s.

Among the rulers of Russia, Empress Catherine II, or Catherine the Great (1729-1796), occupies a special place. German by birth, who did not have any dynastic rights to the Russian throne, she occupied it as a result of a coup and for almost thirty-five years autocratically and firmly ruled a huge empire. The time of her reign is called the "golden age" of the Russian nobility. Two victorious wars with Turkey and one with Sweden, the annexation of the Crimea and the development of Novorossia, the divisions of Poland, as a result of which the Orthodox Ukrainian lands became part of the Russian state - all these are also brilliant achievements of Catherine's "golden age". But in the biography of the empress herself, many mysteries remain. About many of them - the conspiracy of 1762 and the true role of various actors in it, the mystery of the death of Emperor Peter III and the involvement of his wife in this, Catherine's numerous novels and her secret marriage with Potemkin, her views on the burning problems of Russian reality and real politics on peasant and other issues, correspondence with philosophers and relationships with Freemasons - vividly and fascinatingly, with the involvement of all surviving (including archival) sources, the well-known researcher of the Russian XVIII century Olga Eliseeva tells in her new book.

Ippolitov G.M.
Denikin

- M .: Young Guard, 2006. - 672s.

Anton Ivanovich Denikin is one of the most colorful figures in Russian history. Marked by a bright military talent, he lived a difficult, dramatic life, which reflected the complex and contradictory reality of Russia at the end of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century. His military career was married to such global events as the Russo-Japanese War, the First World War and the Civil War. He experienced the loud glory of victories and the bitterness of defeat, the hardships of emigration, wandering in a foreign land. During the Second World War, the Nazis persuaded the general to cooperate, but he answered with a decisive refusal, because all his life he served only Russia.

Kozlyakov V.N.
Mikhail Fedorovich

- M.: Young Guard, 2010.-346s.

Russia after the Time of Troubles is the main theme of this book.
Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich, the founder of the Romanov dynasty, which ruled Russia for more than three hundred years, ascended the throne at the age of fifteen and received power over a devastated, bleeding and torn apart country.
How did it happen that Russia not only survived, but managed to take a significant step forward in its development? What is the role of Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich in this? Does the opinion widespread in the literature, according to which he was a weak, weak-willed ruler, who was completely under the influence of his parents and other relatives, correspond to reality? And to what extent was this a blessing or, conversely, a misfortune for Russia?

Kuzina A.
Chekhov. "The life of an individual"
.
-M.: Young Guard, 2012.-880s.

For the 150th anniversary of the writer came out
the most complete biography of the writer to date.
The work of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov marked the highest rise of Russian classical literature, becoming its "calling card" for the whole world. The main reason for this is the novelty of Chekhov's works, where behind the external ordinariness of the plot lies the deep drama of human relationships and characters. Interest in Chekhov's personality, which determined the originality of his creative method, is huge, therefore, more and more new biographies of him appear in different countries. The most complete of them to date is a major study by the famous literary critic A.P. Kuzina, covering the social activity of the writer, his personal life, the history of the creation of his works. The book, published in the ZhZL series, is recommended for reading by all lovers and connoisseurs of Russian literature.

Kuzmina S.B.
Admiral Kornilov

- M.: Young Guard, 2007.-416s.

The heroic death of Vice Admiral V. A. Kornilov, who led the defense of Sevastopol in September 1854, which contemporaries called "Russian Troy", and Kornilov himself "a hero worthy of Ancient Greece", made a strong impression on both the participants in the defense and the emperor Nicholas I, and on the whole of Russian society, and even on the then Europe. But many of the most important events in the biography of the Vice Admiral before the dramatic events of the Crimean War (1853-1855), his activities as an outstanding military organizer, theorist, strategist, innovator of military art at sea, who prepared a new glorious field for the Russian fleet, remained, as it were, in the shadow of serious interest. (with the exception of rare specialists in military history). This book successfully fills this gap. This is the first detailed study in our historiography of the life and work of an outstanding naval commander and a man, a patriot of Russia.

Kunyaev St., Kunyaev S.
Sergey Yesenin

- M.: Young Guard, 2010. -608s.

This book is fundamentally different from all previously published books about Yesenin, since no ideological dogmas interfered with its creation. In the process of work, the authors managed to get acquainted with a huge number of archival documents that were previously inaccessible. The book traces storylines that have not yet been developed in literature: Yesenin and Trotsky, Yesenin and Stalin, Yesenin and the Romanov family. The relationship of the poet with Zinaida Reich, Isadora Duncan and other life partners, the role of Yesenin in the development of Russian nationalism in the 1920s are covered in a new way. Using many previously unknown documents, chapters were written about Yesenin's stay abroad and, of course, about his tragic death.

“I don’t write autobiographies now. And I don't answer questions. Let the legends go!”
S. Yesenin in a conversation with V. Erlich

Kurukin I.V.
Princess Tarakanova.
-M.: Young Guard. 2011, - 272s.

The one who later became known as Princess Tarakanova remains one of the most mysterious and attractive figures of the 18th century with its palace coups, colorful heroes, alcove secrets and impostors. She easily changed names, countries and lovers, sent letters to the Turkish sultan and the Vatican cardinal, called the brother of the Cossack leader Pugachev and made Catherine II herself worry. The beautiful adventurer was sponsored by a Polish magnate, and the German sovereign count was ready to marry her, but no one ever found out the secret of her origin. It is not surprising that her biography is overgrown with numerous legends. The book of the Doctor of Historical Sciences Igor Kurukin, written on the basis of documents, tells the true story of a desperate adventurer who pretended to be the daughter of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna, who claimed the Russian throne, who even in the casemate of the Peter and Paul Fortress preferred death to a confession of guilt.

Losev L.V.
Joseph Brodsky.

-M.: Young Guard, 2006.-447p.

The life of the outstanding poet, Nobel Prize winner Joseph Brodsky (1940-1996) is full of dramatic turns. Years of poverty and non-recognition, exile, emigration and loud worldwide fame fell to his lot. At the same time, he himself, "a Russian poet and an American citizen," always considered the main thing for himself to be creativity that stands outside state borders. This inseparable unity of life and work is reflected in the biography of Brodsky, written by his old acquaintance, the famous poet and philologist Lev Losev. In the presentation of Losev, Brodsky appears as the heir to great Russian poetry, who managed to "graft a classic rose into the Soviet" wild "
This book is a wonderful gift for admirers of the poet and anyone interested in Russian literature of the 20th century.

Milenko Victoria.
Arkady Averchenko

-M.: Young Guard, 2010.-320s.

Arkady Averchenko - the titled "king of laughter", the founder, tireless editor and many-sided author of the most popular magazines "Satyricon" and "New Satyricon", who published book after book of his own stories and managed to gain fame as an epicurean, a frequenter of restaurants and a note heartthrob - still remains a riddle. Why did he, "a native of the people," warmly greet the February Revolution and thrust his famous book "A Dozen Knives in the Back of the Revolution" into the October Revolution? Why did Lenin respond to "A Dozen of Knives" with a personal review entitled "A Talented Book"? Why, finally, none of the "stories of the heart" brought the humorist to the marriage crown? Victoria Milenko, candidate of philological sciences, Sevastopol researcher of the life and work of her fellow countryman, made an attempt to give a voluminous biography of Arkady Averchenko and answer many questions by combining foreign research, domestic developments and her discoveries both in archival funds and in the history of the writer's family, searching for his living relatives. For the first time, new documents, memoirs, photographs are put into circulation in the publication. The book is dedicated to the 130th anniversary of the birth of A. Averchenko.

Novikov V.
Alexander Blok

-M.: Young Guard, 2010.-252p.

Alexander Blok lived and worked at the turn of two worlds - in the era of the preparation and implementation of the October Revolution. He was the last great poet of the old, pre-October Russia, who completed in his work the poetic searches of the entire 19th century. And at the same time, his name opens the first, title page of the history of Russian Soviet poetry.

I bless everything that was
I was not looking for a better share.
Oh, heart, how much you loved!
Oh mind, how you burned!

Let both happiness and torment
They laid their bitter trail
But in a passionate storm, in a long boredom
I have not lost the old light.

And you, whom I tormented new,
I'm sorry. We are to be together.
Everything that cannot be said in words
I recognized in your form.

Watching eyes look
And the heart beats, worrying, in the chest,
In the cold darkness of a snowy night
Your faithful continuing path.

Osipov V.
Sholokhov

-M.: Young Guard, 2010, - 672s.

Mikhail Aleksandrovich Sholokhov ranks among the greatest world writers such as Homer, Cervantes, Leo Tolstoy. His great epic "Quiet Don" - about the tragedy of the Cossacks in the Civil War - will remain a monument of the Russian XX century for all time. The life of Sholokhov himself is no less dramatic than his famous hero Grigory Melekhov. However, for a long time she was in the shadow of his official status - the main Soviet writer, a member of the Central Committee of the party and a deputy of the Supreme Council. The author of the book, V. O. Osipov, a laureate of the All-Russian Sholokhov Prize, had known the writer for more than twenty years, and visited him more than once in the village of Veshenskaya. Based on many years of research, archival documents, until recently kept under the heading "Secret", as well as personal impressions, the author tried to recreate the life of the great writer in chronological order and free his appearance from the usual officialdom and slander.

Poznansky A.
P.I. Chaikovsky

-M.: Young Guard, 2010.-800s.
.

Alexander Poznansky is the author of numerous articles and monographs about Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky published in the USA, Great Britain, Germany and Japan. The painstaking archival searches of recent years have been reflected in a new biography of the composer, based on documentary materials - multi-volume correspondence and inaccessible memoirs of his contemporaries, resulting in a completely different image of the genius of Russian musical art, not similar to that established in the 20th century.
One of the most recent books about the composer is interesting in that the author tried to maneuver between two trends in revealing the image of Tchaikovsky - "idealization" and "debunking". To what extent this has been achieved is for the readers of this book to judge.

Popov Valery.
Dovlatov

- M.: Young Guard, 2010.-355s.

The literary glory of Sergei Dovlatov has a short history: for many years he could not
to break through to the reader with his funny and sad works that violate all the laws of socialist realism. The publication in Russia of the first Dovlatov's books coincided with the untimely death of their author in distant New York. Interest in the life and work of the émigré writer, whose books triumphantly returned to the Russian reader at the end of perestroika (Dovlatov himself, alas, only waited for magazine publications in his homeland) has practically not decreased since then.
Today, his work has not only won the love of millions of readers, but also attracts the attention of literary scholars, who appreciate in it a refined style, conciseness, and a depth of understanding of life with outward simplicity.

The first biography of Dovlatov in the ZhZL series was written by his old acquaintance, the famous St. Petersburg writer Valery Popov. Valery Popov knew his hero quite well even before emigrating.

Combining personal impressions with the memories of Dovlatov's relatives and friends, he truthfully recreates the difficult life path of his hero, the history of the creation of his works, his relationship with his contemporaries, many of whom, having changed beyond recognition, became characters in his books.

Due to the fault of the writer's heirs, who frightened the publishing house "Young Guard" with possible lawsuits, the book was published without illustrations. It turns out that there is a law that says that you can post photos only with the consent of all the persons imprinted on them.
The book is written in a very friendly tone, a lot of personal memories.

Prilepin Zakhar.
Leonid Leonov

- M.: Young Guard, 2010. -576s.

Zakhar Prilepin, one of the most famous young writers, offers his version of the biography of the last Russian classic Leonid Leonov, who lived a huge life full of tragic collisions that have not yet been fully explored, as well as original interpretations of his classic works: the novels "Badgers", "The Thief ", "Road to the Ocean", "Russian Forest", "Pyramid". Separate chapters are devoted to Leonov's complex relationship with Yesenin, Bulgakov, Gorky. A new look at the time of the so-called "Stalinist repressions" allows the author to assert that Leonov in his works played a difficult, long and dangerous "game" with the leader, which is one of the most curious, almost detective plots in the literature of the 20th century. The author did not pass by such a complex, controversial topic as Leonov and the Church. The book, like the life of its hero, covers a huge era: from the First World War and the Civil War to the collapse of the USSR and the execution of the parliament.

This is a guide to the complex world of Leonid Leonov..
A new book by Zakhar Prilepin "Leonid Leonov: His Game Was Huge" has already made it to the long list of one of the country's most prestigious awards, the Big Book.

We evaluate books from the ZhZL series according to two criteria - how the book itself is written from the point of view of literature and how much the author managed to reflect the personality and work of his hero, to arouse readers' interest in him. A. Einstein said:
“The moral qualities of a remarkable person matter more
for his generation and for the historical process,
than purely intellectual achievements"

This famous series is in constant demand among our readers. There are also fans of the ZhZL series who have remained faithful to it through the years, through all the economic and ideological upheavals of recent years.
Reader Chubrikov Vladimir Ivanovich takes on the subscription only books of the series "Life of Remarkable People". He has read over 250 books in the series since 1998 and continues to read.

"The greatest glory of the people is its writers" B. Johnson said

“The meaning of the ZhZL series is that through history and personalities
it reveals all the richness and diversity of the culture of the past.
Biographies of people who served the progress of mankind,
have great educational value.

And how not to guess about fate: the Khazars came very close ... "

One of the best novels Sergei Borodin "Dmitry Donskoy"- the first work from a series of historical novels on the history of medieval Moscow about the struggle of the Russian principalities under the leadership of the Moscow prince Dmitry Ivanovich against the yoke of the Tatar Golden Horde, the end of which was marked by the decisive battle on the Kulikovo field in 1380.

Seductive and secular, liberal and conservative, suspicious and deeply religious - the personality of Alexander I still causes many controversies. His reign began with one coup d'état and ended with another. He himself dreamed of changing his country, but he changed the world by defeating Napoleon's Grand Army, which was considered invincible. There were legends about his death that have not been refuted so far. Who is he, the tenth emperor of Russia? You can find the answer in the book Melnikova L.V. "Alexander 1 Emperor of Europe".

Balyazin V. N. "Nicholas I, his son Alexander II, his grandson Alexander III.". The unexpected death of Alexander I gave rise to a constitutional crisis. Alexander's elder brother, Constantine, renounced the right to inherit the throne. Alexander with a special manifesto announced the refusal of Constantine and the transfer of his rights to his younger brother, Nicholas. The content of the manifesto was kept secret. Even Nicholas did not know for sure whether he was appointed heir. The avalanche of state affairs that fell upon Nicholas did not take him by surprise. He was industrious, pedantic and persistent and considered the work on stationery one of his most important tasks. Nikolai closely followed the course of foreign affairs, did not disregard internal affairs, and spent many hours at parades and in the barracks. Nicholas reigned for nineteen years. After the death of Nicholas, the throne was inherited by his first-born, Alexander, who became an outstanding sovereign of Russia, the tsar-liberator, who put an end to the shameful serfdom. Alexander II was the undisputed head of the Romanov dynasty. In 1881, Alexander II was killed by a bomb thrown by a Narodnaya Volya. His son Alexander III became the new emperor. The death of his father left a heavy imprint on the character of the sovereign and his entire reign.

"Favorite"- historical novel Valentina Pikulya. It sets out a chronicle of the times of Catherine II. Many believe that it will be very difficult for a "newcomer" to read Karamzin, but still … "History of Russian Goverment"- a multi-volume work by Nikolai Mikhailovich Karamzin, describing Russian history from ancient times to the reign of Ivan the Terrible and the Time of Troubles. Karamzin's work was not the first description of the history of Russia, but it was this work, thanks to the high literary merit and scientific scrupulousness of the author, that opened the history of Russia to a wide educated public and most contributed to the formation of national identity.

interesting book “Childhood in the royal house. How the heirs to the Russian throne were raised” by Vera Bokova. To be born into a royal family, according to many, is luck. But this luck turned into a heavy burden of duties at a very young age. What does it mean to be heir to the throne with an advance, from a very early age, to feel the responsibility that will fall on your shoulders in the future? How to educate someone who in a few years will receive unlimited power and will decide the fate of the world? How did the sons and daughters of the kings live, with whom did they make friends, what did they play, what did they read and how did they get used to their difficult duties, how did their relationship with their parents and educators develop, in what court festivities and ceremonies did they participate? The book of Vera Bokova is dedicated both to the royal offspring themselves and to those who carried out a special mission - they raised, taught and nurtured them.

Alexey Karpov. Yaroslav the Wise (Life of wonderful people)

Childhood, the earliest years, Yaroslav probably spent not in Kyiv itself, but in the nearby village of Predslavino, which belonged to his mother, Princess Rogneda. The village was located on the banks of the Lybid river, which flowed into the Dnieper. Now it can be said to be a stream, but during the time of Vladimir and Yaroslav Lybed was quite navigable. The view of the prince from the window of the mother's chamber could open not only the city suburbs, arable land and vegetable gardens, long mastered by the people of Kiev, but also the surface of the river, along which the prince's canoes, merchant boats and boats of commoners scurried every now and then - witnesses of that lively, never ending life that swirled around. Yaroslav's mother, Rogneda, until the time remained the beloved wife of Prince Vladimir. He clearly favored her for everyone, preferring her to his other wives and numerous concubines, was a frequent guest in her chambers and willingly stayed here for the night. Rogneda and bore him more children than the other four legitimate (or, in Russian, "led") wives of the prince - four sons and two daughters.

"If your name is Komsomol" - this is the name of the exhibition-calendar for the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Komsomol, designed in the reading room of the central regional library.
The exhibition presents Komsomol statutes, tickets, books, magazine and newspaper articles related to the history of the Komsomol and the stages of the historical path of our country, as well as articles from local periodicals about the Komsomol members of the region.
Of great interest is the already rare fiction and documentary literature about the Komsomol and its leaders from different eras.
For example, the exhibition presents the two-volume "Glorious Path of the Leninist Komsomol" published in 1974; "Leninsky Komsomol" v.1: Essay on the history of the Komsomol (1918 - 1941) 1969, etc.
The book “The Word about the Komsomol ticket”, published on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the formation of the Komsomol, tells about the history of the Komsomol ticket, about the congresses and awards of the Lenin Komsomol, about the All-Union campaigns of youth in places of revolutionary, military and labor glory, about the affairs and people of the Komsomol.

It attracts the attention of readers and guests of the library, helps to plunge into the memories of youth, and tells the younger generation in detail and in an accessible way about the most massive youth organization of the Soviet era.

2016 has been declared the Year of Russian Cinema in Russia. In the reading room of the City Library. V. A. Chivilikhin arranged a book exhibition "History captured in the frame", dedicated to historical feature films and documentaries.
It's always interesting to compare a movie to a book. This book fair provides that opportunity. It presents books about the great commanders, rulers, famous travelers, scientists, writers and poets of Russia.
Our country is rich in worthy historical figures. A separate category of its famous representatives is occupied by the great commanders of Russia.
A special place in the exhibition is occupied by the book by K. Valishevsky "Peter the Great". It tells about the life and work of the first Russian emperor Peter I. The author, a well-known scientist (historian, economist, sociologist) of the late 19th - early 20th centuries, presents an alternative point of view on the events of that era, reflects on how the personality of the reformer tsar was formed , largely debunking the heroic image that is so well known to the Russian reader from school textbooks. Despite the fact that many of Valishevsky's assessments and conclusions may seem controversial today, "Peter the Great" will certainly interest all lovers of Russian history, primarily due to the huge amount of little-known factual material collected and presented in the book.
The exhibition also presents two volumes of a collection about the Soviet commander, four times Hero of the Soviet Union, the great commander, who remained in the history of Russia as one of the main creators of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, G.K. Zhukov. Both editions are called "Marshal Zhukov: commander and man", its compilers A.D. Mirkin and V.S. Yarovikov. The collections include memoirs and articles written by his relatives and friends, comrades-in-arms, and friends. Many of them took up the pen for the first time to help recreate the portrait of the great commander. The reader will see the whole life path of the marshal, many facts of his biography are mentioned for the first time.
D. Jena's book "Russian Queens" presents biographies not just of women, but of women rulers, women who made history and on whom the fate of people depended. Russian queens, and from the 18th century empresses, played a colossal role in the life of our country. This role was significant not only in the 18th century, which in the history of Russia became the century of female rule, but also in earlier periods. The seven wives of Ivan the Terrible, beloved, criminal, nameless in the "Third Rome", the wives of the tsars and emperors of the Romanov dynasty - all of them are presented on the pages of the book of the German historian Detlef Jena. The chosen genre - psychological history - leaves a unique imprint on the book. Bright, memorable images imprinted on its pages will not leave indifferent even the most sophisticated reader.
In folk memory, Yermak lives as an ataman-bogatyr, the conqueror of Siberia, a strong and invincible warrior, even despite his tragic death. Who was this man who led a handful of brave men, as the songs say, "to glory and to death"? What were they - the legendary free Cossacks? Readers will learn about this from B. A. Almazov’s book “Ermak Timofeevich - Prince of Siberia”. Boris Almazov is not only a talented writer, but also a well-known leader of the Cossack movement, chieftain. Therefore, in his novel, he describes the details of the life of the Cossacks in a particularly colorful and juicy way, shows what a huge role they played in the development of the Siberian expanses.
“He was extremely endowed with the subtlest sense of nature, the nature of Rus', Russia, the Motherland, which he infinitely, selflessly loved. Literally everywhere he did not part with Russia, he remembers her, talks about her. So the Russian Soviet poet Alexander Andreevich Prokofiev wrote about S. Yesenin. Articles, essays, sketches of this and many other Soviet poets, critics, writers can be read in the collection of articles "In the World of Yesenin", which is also presented at the book exhibition.
In the unfading constellation of heroes, the short life of the first cosmonaut of the planet, Yuri Alekseevich Gagarin, sparkles dazzlingly bright. The book from the Life of Remarkable People series, which is called Yuri Gagarin, will help readers learn something new about this wonderful person. It was written by V. Stepanova. The book contains extensive documentary material, an important place in which is occupied by the testimonies of Yuri Gagarin's close friends and associates, as well as the author's own memoirs, who personally knew the pioneer of space.
The book exhibition “History Captured in the Frame” will be of interest to many readers, because it presents literary publications that tell about people who have dedicated their lives to serving the Fatherland, and who, thanks to their abilities, certain circumstances and vocation, have left an indelible mark on the history of Russia.
